VOIP 101

Hey, did you hear it’s possible to make telephone calls on the Web? While most people reading this post have used a VoIP service or know what it involves, there are millions of consumers still out of the loop. To fix this “problem”, Google, Skype and EarthLink plan to fund an educational program called the Internet Voice Campaign. It sounds like a pretty good idea, particularly when you consider IDC estimates the number of people in the U.S. using a VoIP service for jump nine-fold to 27 million by 2009 from 3.1 million this year. Some of the other companies involved in the educational campaign are Sonus Networks and Pulver.com.
We Say: Maybe this campaign will kill the term “VoIP” and/or convince Vonage to stop using “VoIP” in its semi-annoying advertisements. I say bring on “Internet telephony” or “WebTone”.
