Like many of you, technology is a key part of both my vocation and avocation. I’ve been in the field now for over 25 years and it’s been great. Throughout all of my various jobs, contracts, moves around the country, and the times in between, a constant companion for me has been a cat. I have a 5 year old grey mackeral tabby tom cat at present. From my earliest recollections, there’s always been at least one cat around. I have nothing against dogs, but cats are easier to deal with when you have to work late to crank out some code changes. Cats are my constant companion. I have a responsibility, a trust, to take care of him, and, he, in his way, relies on that.

Recently, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have devastated areas along the Gulf Coast. The pictures of the devastation have been all over the media. Another casualty of the storm is the many pets that had to be left behind or were separated from their owners. I know I would be distraught beyond belief if I lost my cat in such a disaster and would welcome any assistance to find him. A wonderful organization Noah’s Wish has been very involved in the disaster response. Noah’s Wish is a not-for-profit, animal welfare organization, with a straightforward mission. They are dedicated exclusively to rescuing and sheltering animals in disasters throughout the United States and Canada. I encourage you to visit their website and help them in whatever way you can.

They are not alone. The Humane Society, the ASPCA, and Petfinder.com are also among the many organizations working in the area. The cost of a couple double mochas would really help our animal companions so much right now.
