Your Kids And The Internet

Do your kids spend too much time online? Is instant messaging fast becoming your kid’s favorite “hobby”? Do you constantly worry your kid is not getting enough exercise, do you worry about what websites they are visiting and who they are talking too? According to an article on News.com, children are spending more time online and on cell phones.

A report on teenagers and technology released this summer by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that teenagers’ use of computers has increased significantly. More than half of teenage Internet users go online daily, up from 42 percent in 2000, the report said; 81 percent of those users play video games, up from 52 percent.

In interviews and surveys many parents say that their children spend too much time in front of computers and on cell phones. Some parent’s worry that long, sedentary hours spent at a computer may lead to weight gain, or that an excess of instant and text messaging comes at the expense of learning face-to-face social skills. Some complain of having to compete for their children’s’ attention more than ever.

We Say: I have the perfect solution, little league. Involve your kids in sports, it will increase the amount of exercise they get, it will introduce them to new skills, it will help prepare them for the real world, because not everyone can be quarterback, and it will help limit the time they spend in front of the computer. It’s win-win for everyone.

Nope. I can’t believe how many of my oldest boy’s friends even have cell phones, and he’s only 12. Ofcourse I get to be the bad guy, but until he comes up with a better reason than calling his friends, I’m afraid he’s out of luck.
