Beat the Rush to Download OpenOffice 2.0 Final!
By David Johnston

Though it hasn’t officially been announced yet, the final version of OpenOffice 2.0 is circulating around the download mirrors and you can get it now before the main rush. I have downloaded and installed it and it’s a big improvement over 1.1.5 as well as the beta versions of 2.0 in that it seems faster and the user interface looks cleaner.
Beware, though, the download is a whopping 75MB (I feel sorry for you if you’re still on dialup). In case you hadn’t already heard, OpenOffice is an open-source competitor to Microsoft’s Office suite. It has programs to match almost all of the functionality offered in MS Office and is compatible with MS Office documents as well. It can also save documents as Adobe PDF files which is a great feature that is still missing from MS Office for some reason (without extra add-ons). Probably the best thing about OpenOffice, however, is the price. While you’d have to spend hundreds of dollars to get the latest version of Microsoft Office, you can download OpenOffice for free. So, if you haven’t tried OpenOffice yet, I’d highly reccomend giving this new version a look.
So far, I know that these sites have it:
sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de
ftp.snt.utwente.nl
You can find versions for Windows, Linux, and Solaris but I haven’t seen the OSX version yet. Have fun! Thanks to Digg.com for the heads’ up.

Ahh, an attempt to stop everyone from crying “But Sector7’s PDFcreator is free, and enables PDF creation for all applications (that are capable of printing) with just one install”…

DONT USE TORRENTS
Just a warning - I have been contacted TWICE by my ISP telling me that i downloaded illegal content through BiTorrent, when I havent. I have uninstalled anything to do with it and will never touch it again! It is amazing at how open you really are, even if you abuse (use) Tor!!! Hijacking is becoming commonplace…just a warning.
