Why do the cool cellular things have to happen in Korea these days? The United States is SO far behind on all things cellular and it just keeps getting worse. We are still excited about ringtones for God’s sake. Case in point, news today of a feature that let’s you text message or (SMS) via your TV.

A new SMS sends text messages from TV to cell phone or from TV to TV. Infobank, a mobile solution developer announced the launch of Message on TV, the SMS based on interactive digital data broadcasting service. Users can send text messages from a TV to a cell phone by pushing number- and function-keys on the remote control. Source: TelecomsKorea.com

Maybe the whole gee-whiz notion of typing out tedious little messages is beyond me, but it seems like this would be a great way to get unsolicited spam on your TV. As if all the other scrolling text bars, network logos and assorted distractions weren’t eating up enough screen real estate as it is. It’s also clear that anyone excited about more text options doesn’t have a teen-aged kid at home and had to pay a $350 cell bill due to “texting” overages. Still, the best tech site on the Net bar none.

Vegas Guy, actually, typing in Korean on a phone is much faster than typing in English, so it’s not so tedious as it might seem. Texting a message only costs 3 cents in Korea and there are no overages, so $350 phone bills just don’t happen. The most I’ve heard of was about $100. I agree though, it sure could attract a lot of spam!

BTW - the message being sent on the screen says (roughly translated: “Dong-Su (Kid’s name), it appears your mom will be late. Eat and do your homework. From your mother who loves you.
