Must Read: 122 Ways to Speed Up Windows XP

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

A few weeks ago I mentioned in a semi-joking way that my machine took 30 minutes to boot up and was raked over the coals for running such an un-optimized rig. Fair enough, so I decided to do something about it. For those of us suffering from the bloat of IM clients and little add ons and the general system drift that happens over time, here is a fantastic piece from a guy at TechBuilder on fine-tuning Windows XP. (I’m fine tuning as I write this in fact.) I featured three tips here, and then I highly suggest you go read all 23 - there are some great ideas, and I guarantee there’s at least one even the toughest RTN techie readers have missed.

UPDATE: Spoke too soon. I also found 99 Tricks to SpeedUp Improve XPs Boot and Start Up Time, so if you are feeling really zany, try this great link at Neowin.net. They hooked me up to a highly useful piece of software called TuneXP. Wish me luck. I am about to reboot once I post this update. –Alice

4.) Disable file indexing. The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a “searchable keyword index.” As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system.

The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside a document, should they have hundreds or thousands of documents and not know the file name of the document they want. Windows XP’s built-in search functionality can still perform these kinds of searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer. The OS has to open each file at the time of the request to help find what the user is looking for. Most people never need this feature of search. Those who do are typically in a large corporate environment where thousands of documents are located on at least one server. But if you’re a typical system builder, most of your clients are small and medium businesses. And if your clients have no need for this search feature, I recommend disabling it.

Here’s how: First, double-click the My Computer icon. Next, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.” Next, apply changes to “C: subfolders and files,” and click OK. If a warning or error message appears (such as “Access is denied”), click the Ignore All button.

8.) In your Device Manager, double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device, and ensure that DMA is enabled for each drive you have connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on Primary IDE Channel. Then click the Advanced Settings tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to “DMA if available” for both Device 0 and Device 1. Then repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel.

11.) Remove any unnecessary programs and/or items from Windows Startup routine using the MSCONFIG utility. Here’s how: First, click Start, click Run, type MSCONFIG, and click OK. Click the StartUp tab, then uncheck any items you don’t want to start when Windows starts. Unsure what some items are? Visit the WinTasks Process Library. It contains known system processes, applications, as well as spyware references and explanations. Or quickly identify them by searching for the filenames using Google or another Web search engine.

    MSCONFIG is probably the best, and easiest, of those options for tweaking. I have only 6 of 32 checkboxes checked in my startup config. I can’t imagine how long it would take to boot with 26 other programs having to load.

    I wish I could find the tweak guide for the Services too. this is one, but it’s not the one I used a while back when I reformatted. There’s a lot of crap that can be disabled there, too. Stuff that’s on by default but many would never use. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and just go through the list one by one. As a rule of thumb, don’t disable it if you think you might need it.

    And yet, Google Desktop manages to have a system that does the exact same thing (only better) without taking to much of the system to do it.

    The Black Viper debunking can be debunked, or at least put into context. It does a good job at proving such tips do not give you the whopping performance increase you might expect — getting a higher FPS for your favorite game, for example. But it ignores the virtues of those tips for other purposes.

    The debunking neglects to mention that disabling some services can increase security (less attack vectors; even Microsoft recognized the Messenger service had to be disabled in XP SP2). It also doesn’t address startup performance, which is what Alice was challenged on, and which is the only real performance aspect that I care about. I don’t care if these Black Viper tips will increase or decrease operational performance by the miniscule, unnoticeable amounts mentioned in the debunking… I care about startup time. Less services to load = faster startup. Same with hibernate time. Less useless stuff in memory, the less time it takes to write and read to and from the drive.

    Yet I wouldn’t recommend most of these performance tips that including disabling services to those who don’t know exactly what they are doing. I still remember not being able to install a Windows NT 4 service pack on my servers — I had disabled print spooler because I never printed from my servers. It turns out you can’t install a service pack without the print spooler — go figure.

    Your article is entitled “23 Ways to Speed Up Windows XP” – and while it contains a great deal of wonderful sound advice, but not all of it correct.

    1 & 2) YEP. Your advice to upgrade your computer’s hard drive and increase its memory should be followed. Adding more memory is probably THE best advice!

    3) YEP – don’t use FAT, use NTFS it’s the fastest, and most secure

    4) YEP Disable file indexing. Agreed – this just makes your hard drive spin all the time. . .and rarely makes searching faster!

    5) NOPE. Updating the software on the actual computer’s hardware (aka firmware, BIOS) can actually be pretty risky. If not done correctly, it can render your computer “useless”. Updates to your firmware is usually for stability, or adding functionality – it is seldom for a performance upgrade.

    6) NOPE. Empting the Windows Prefetch folder MAY make things to appear to load faster, but only on bootup – that’s it. . .it does not make your overall performance faster.

    7) YEP. Actually, let’s take your good advice – and add it to your automatic scheduler!

    8) NOPE. If your hardware was NOT automatically detected with “Enabled DMA” – do NOT change it. Yes, this option makes Windows faster – but if your drive doesn’t do it, it doesn’t do it!

    9) NOPE. Unless you’ve built your own computer – or upgrade from regular IDE to Utlra IDE – there is NO reason to changes cables. . .and there is NO increase in speed.

    10) A BIG YEP! Spyware will cripple your computers speed!

    11) NOPE. The MSCONFIG utility is for troubleshooting NOT speeding up your computer. And while it is true that removing unnecessary programs that run on StartUp will increase the speed of your computer – MSCONFIG is really for Windows 98, you are supposed to use “services.msc” in Windows XP

    12) SORTA. Remove any unnecessary or unused programs from the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel make the bootup faster, but only marginally once the computer is running.

    13) YEP. Fancy graphics are a resource hog – turn them off.

    14) SORTA. Most powertoys from Microsoft usually make it easier to ADD stuff rather than remove it! :-)

    15) NOPE but SORTA. Updates rarely make your computer run faster. But I’m NEVER going to disagree with this point!

    16) SORTA. Keeping your AntiVirus updated doesn’t make your computer faster – but NOT getting infected with a Virus sure does!

    17) YEP BUT. It’s true that too many fonts can slow down a computer – but be warned, there is NO way to know which documents will be affected with you remove fonts. Be careful!

    18) NOPE. But the issue of partitioning is too long for a paragraph – but it’s not a function of “speed”, but rather “stability”.

    19) NOPE. Windows XP manages memory just fine, see your recommendation #1. Purchase more memory!

    20) DOUBTFUL. I’ve seen it, but that is such a rare case, that my position is noted in #9

    21) YES. This is sorta like #11 – and unfortunately the Black Viper is “off air” (again)

    22) NOPE HUH? Nice tip – but changing Explorer’s view it doesn’t really make your computer run faster.

    23.) NOPE. Again a nice tip – but blowing out dust, doesn’t really make your computer run faster

    Total Score:
    Yes = 9
    No = 10
    Sorta = 4

  16. Anonymous Cowherd says:

    From the article:

    3.) Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file
    system. If you’re not sure, here’s how to check: First,
    double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C:
    Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File
    System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important
    data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then
    click OK. At the prompt, type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and
    press the Enter key. This process may take a while; it’s
    important that the computer be uninterrupted and
    virus-free. The file system used by the bootable drive
    will be either FAT32 or NTFS. I highly recommend NTFS for
    its superior security, reliability, and efficiency with
    larger disk drives.

    NTFS improves security, but converting a FAT32 volume to NTFS using the built-in CONVERT.EXE utility will result in an NTFS volume with 512 byte clusters. The default cluster size for an NTFS volume of any reasonable size is normally 4KB, so having cluster sizes 1/8 that size will substantially affect performance (negatively).

    I found a web page that claims CONVERT.EXE will use 4k clusters if you first do a little prep work with a $30 shareware utility ( http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.php ), but I haven’t verified the authenticity of the claims on that page. Partition Magic does support resizing of NTFS clusters, in case anyone has CONVERTed and discovered the hard way the performance hit you take with 512 byte clusters.

    I wholly support the idea of using NTFS instead of FAT32 whenever possible, but there’s no way that converting from FAT32’s 4KB clusters to 512-byte clusters in NTFS is going to do anything but exact a huge performance toll.

    I recommend spyware blaster www.javacoolsoftware.com for preventing spyware from getting on your computer in the first place.

    mainly though, I will use a program like autoruns from www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html and a site like www.tasklist.org and weed out the unneeded startup programs. But you want to do one at a time and know exactly what you are taking out before you remove it.

    A lot of Runescape PKers focus on one or two stats so that they remain a fairly low level player but pack a punch that is much larger than the average player their level. But be warned, other Runescape players are more of a challenge than a mindless monster. An actual player can heal themselves with food, or prayer to defend themselves, and can fight back with their own cunning strategies. The best area for PKing is North of Varrock, preferably North of the dungeon area.

    ; Disclaimer: These tweaks MAY result in serious problems that may require
    ; you to reinstall your operating system. I cannot guarantee that problems
    ; resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use this reg file
    ; at your own risk.
    ;
    ; ** WARNING: Some of these tweaks may not be suitable for your system. Make sure
    ; you go through the entire list below so that you may modify it according to
    ; your system and your preferences.
    ; In case you find a tweak that is not suitable or you plainly dont like it,
    ; please do not delete it. Instead just comment it out like these notes here.
    ;
    ; Also, when adding your own tweaks, please follow the same format followed here.
    ;
    ; These tweaks have been compiled from a lot of sources on the web, magazines,
    ; and from some tweaking programs themselves. Thanks for all those who have
    ; contributed to this file!

    ;
    ;———————————————————————————
    ;
    ; ————————
    ; Understanding this file:
    ; ————————
    ;
    ; This reg file is divided into 9 sections:
    ; 1 Windows Services
    ; 2 Desktop Tweaks
    ; 3 StartMenu and TaskBar Tweaks
    ; 4 Explorer / System Tweaks
    ; 5 System / Hardware Tweaks
    ; 6 Visual Effects Tweaks
    ; 7 Internet Explorer
    ; 8 Security / Privacy Related
    ; 9 Misc. Application Tweaks
    ;
    ;
    ; Basic format / syntax :
    ; ———————-
    ;
    ; You can use the semi-colon not only to comment, but also to DISABLE unneeded,
    ; unknown, or inapplicable tweaks. Its better to comment out a tweak with the;
    ; instead of plainly deleting it so that it can be re-enabled by others incase
    ; they require the tweak.
    ;
    ; For example, a standard tweak may look like this:
    ;
    ;;Disable Active Desktop
    ; [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
    ; “NoActiveDesktop”=dword:00000001
    ;
    ; The first line is the description of the tweak which is obviously commented (;)
    ; The second line shows the registry key
    ; The third line is the actual value/setting.
    ;
    ; The dword: stands for REG_DWORD type of keys and HAS to be in a 8 bit hex format
    ; as shown above. Usually 00000001 means yes or true, and 00000000 means no/false.
    ; To convert decimal (ordinary) values to hex, you can use the windows calculator
    ; (scientific mode) to convert decimal->hex.
    ;
    ; Note: You can directly jump to the various sections of this file by simply
    ; searching for the index number. Eg, if you search for (7/9), you’d directly
    ; reach the internet explorer tweaks section.
    ;
