Google’s New RSS Reader
By Mark Evans
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews
After hearing rumblings Google had launched a new RSS reader - another day, another new service from your friendly search engine king - I decided to check it out (You can get it here if you have a Google account.) Here’s my mini-review.
Our Take: It’s your typical Google service: clean, simple and fast. If you want something with more bells and whistles, this RSS reader isn’t for you. In many ways, it is similar to Bloglines, which makes it a nice tool to access RSS subscriptions while on the road. You have to ask why Google took so long to get into the RSS game.

I’ve spent some time using this RSS reader and I’m very excited. I like having the ability to star an item, and I also like how Reader remembers what you’ve already read. It makes reading news much easier than google.com/ig and a little easier knowing it’s coming from google.
I would love to hear any tips or see how people have used the tool to more effectively read feeds.

I’ve been using Bloglines for quite some time. With the current Google Reader UI, there’s absolutely no chance I’ll be abandoning Bloglines for Reader.
Here’re a few things Bloglines have that Reader does not:
- A quick overall look of how many items are unread.
- Summary of each RSS feed item without needing to click onto each item.
- Ability to generate Bloglines e-mail addresses to subscribe to e-mail newsletters so that they appear together with the other RSS feeds. (And to avoid spam!)
- Ability to group similar RSS feeds into folders.
In short, I find Google Reader to be technically whizzy, but lacks in basic usability.

I don’t like Google new reader. I think is not intuitive and easy to use. I also had problems trying to add a second feed from Your subscriptions -> Add a Feed. It simply didn’t worked. Maybe is still beta or even pre-release.

I agree with Jack regarding Google Reader vs. Bloglines. Anyone who says Google Reader is similar to Bloglines doesn’t USE Bloglines.
