Revenge Tech: The Mind Molester Revenge Device

We don’t have a revenge category here at RealTech News, but people for centuries have been trying to get revenge with all sorts of tools and tricks. I remember reading a copy of “Outlaw Biker” magazine in college and it had a monthly revenge column with all sort of suggestions like running a garden hose though your neighbor’s mail slot while they were out of town and so on. Not a big fan of the genre, but let’s say it is amusing to read about anyway. In that spirit we present the simple but oh so effective, Mind Molester:

The Mind Molester is a small device that emits a high pitched beep every three minutes (kind of like a cell phone with low batteries. If you plant it under a piece of furniture, it is hard to find. I’m tempted to plant one of these things in the house of a neighbor who keeps me up with late parties.

The Mind Molester In Action: I decided to first plant it in the Living room right behind the tv so its sound would distinctly interupt anyone’s viewing experience as well as be masked by the TV sound. The first beep came 5 minutes after I planted it followed by the 3 minute interval of beeps that come once it sets into its sequence. For the first few beeps I got nothing. But then people started asking what that beeping was. Next thing I knew I was watching them rummage through the room looking for it. They dug out the couch and chairs, opened the drawers and everything. All I could do was try not to laugh. It was quite amusing. And so for a few hours I left it there and drove everyone nuts. They never could locate the source of the beeping. The 3 minute interval that I at first thought was too long was perfect. Just enough to get their attention and just when they give up the search it’d come back and aggravate them. I loved it! Source: Boing Boing via Gizmodo via Random Good Stuff

We say: just hide your cell phone in a couch. Mine will drive you nuts in under an hour for free, the beeping is so loud.

Every once in a while I push the right button on my Timex digital watch to make it beep every hour. Once I lost the watch while it was going this and it didn’t take me very long to find the watch, then disable the beeping. I expect that such a device as this “Mind Molester” wouldn’t be very effective for just this reason. Bass sound is hard to locate, but higher frequencies are very directional.

My Grandmother once asked me to find a cricket in her apartment, that kept chirping every few minutes, and she could not find it and was driving her crazy.

Turned out to be her smoke detector, chirping to let you know the battery was going bad.

We used to make them (at a lower frequency), and called them “lease breakers”. You put them in the attic, and the sub-harmonics cause serious depression. Usually about a month was all it took!
