Donate Your Old Cell Phone to CollectiveGood and Get a Tax Write-Off

As a hard-core techie, I may not drive an SUV, but I am not exactly easy on the environment. When I took an online quiz that measured how many planets the earth would need to support someone like myself, I ended up somewhere on the land-raping monster scale. (You can view my scary results here) But I also applaud the efforts of an organization called Collectivegood, a site that collects old cell phones and then makes donations to charities. You can also dump off your old cell phone at the US office supply chain, Staples. We say: Good job!

Q: What is the purpose of the CollectiveGood mobile phone recycling program?
A: The CollectiveGood mobile phone recycling program serves several important purposes:

* There are more than 500 million used mobile phones in the US sitting on shelves or in our landfills, and another 125 million will be added to the shelves or landfills this year alone! The problem is growing at a rate of more than 2 million phones per week, putting tons of toxic waste into our landfills daily. This mountain of toxic waste poses a major threat to the environment, and an equally large opportunity to re-channel these devices into productive reuse. Our program is based on the goal of diverting these useful devices from harming the environment, and helping charities raise money so they can pursue more of their good deeds. Please note that we also accept pagers and PDAs (like Palm Pilots) too

* The EPA has established that mobile phones count as hazardous waste, due to their content of Lead, Mercury, Cadmium and Arsenic. Recycling your old cell phone and keeping it out of a landfill on incinerator is an easy way to protect the environment, and people

I usually go straight to the source and donate my old cell phones to the local women’s shelter. This way I know the right people are getting the equipment.

I would like to mention a program in the greater Phoneix area called AZSTRUT (Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology). Drop-off points include any of the 22 valley Data Doctors stores. We take computers, printers, cell phones, fax machines, stereos, monitor etc.

As the name implies, the devices go to various educational facilities where students use them for educational purposes and fundraising.

For a list of Data Doctors stores, go to www.datadoctors.com and enter your zip code.
