Could the New WordPress.com Kill Off Blogger?

Today I will be reviewing the newest entry to the blogging world, WordPress.com. You may be saying to yourself, “but isn’t Real Tech News run on WordPress software?” You are correct - Real Tech News is run with WordPress software. Today’s review of WordPress.com is for people who don’t want to worry about domains or hosting issues, and that aims it squarely at this site’s old home, Blogger.com.
What is WordPress.com?
WordPress.com is a hosted, free blogging solution just like Blogger. While WordPress.com is in a very early Alpha stage, it is drawing the attention of bloggers around the world with its inclusion of AJAX scripts and other new features such as a rich WYSIWYG that allows you to drag and drop photos or images into your posts, and a new and improved Dashboard that allows users not only to check on the Top 5 blogs on WordPress.com, but up and coming blogs too.
People who have used the full version of WordPress, will feel the limitations, IE you cant use plugins, you can not access the code to modify your site, and you have to use one of their themes, but it’s a trade off most people are living with. You see WordPress.com is also the testing ground for most of the new releases for WordPress 1.6. A novice blogger will get a chance to start blogging with a powerful blog engine by using WordPress.com, without all the work and hassle of finding a host, buying a domain name and installing all the software. For bloggers looking to try hosting their own blogs, this is a good chance to see what WordPress software can do without downloading the full version.
John’s 2 cents:
I like what WordPress.com is doing with this foray into multi-blog hosting. While it is in an early Alpha stage you can still see that the future is bright for WordPress.com. To be honest I have been posting more at my WordPress.com blog than on my main blog.
Alice Adds: I loved Blogger but as a platform it was plagued by outages and problems and so I moved to WordPress and never looked back. I think Blogger is in no danger of dying, with Google being the owner, but for those looking to trade up, WordPress is a great solution.

I think they cannot compete with Blogger ever. Blogger will continue to stay free. Google is running it. As for features Google is quietly adding features behind the scenes. Wordpress is still in its infancy. As soon as they get more users, they will not be able to handle the bandwidth. They will be forced to go as pay site and start losing users who will then lokk for the next free blogging host. This has been the trend for most of the blogging sites. I don’t the wordpress will make enough to cover their costs by advertising revenue.

If you’re interested in using a free hosted version of WordPress without needing an invite, you might wanna check out http://www.positroniks.com I’ve been playing with it and it’s pretty good. It also has a wysiwyg editor but not with the ajax drag-n-drop toys. It does allow you some slightly limited customising of your blog theme using css stylesheets, which you cannot do with WordPress.com It’s not as flashy but you have a bit more freedom and it is still based on WordPress.

WP indeed has a large fanbase. But WP.com will not be able to compete head-to-head with Blogger. Blogger has a big-brother (aka big alter-ego) called Google.

Hmmm,
couple of points -
YOU are talking about the MULTI-USER version of Wordpress here.
The (Free) standalone version, which is the standard, ALLOWS plugins, access to code and multiple (Free!) themes.
The other enhancements you mention above will filter into WP1.6 when the testings done.

Actually Calvin, at Blogsome you can remove the adsense blocks if you wish. We’ve been giving free WordPress blogs out for over a year….and we allow users change their template, unlike wordpress.com.

I’m sorry, but this review, in my eyes, can’t be categorized as a great reveiw of the wordpress.com-platform. Not really that much info/new stuff in the review, and not really any descriptions of pros and cons. So, please, If you say it’s a great review, live up to it.
