Windows Treo (Treo 700w aka Treo 670) Released Today

PALM is is about to release its Windows Treo today, just as reviews are set to write off the Volish operating system that will run the gadget. Palm, Microsoft, and Verizon have booked a press conference in San Francisco to launch the new Windows-based Treo smart phone.
At the meeting will be Palm’s president Ed Colligan and Microsoft Chairman and software king of the world Sir William Gates III and Verizon President Denny Strigl. Palm has dumped PalmSource, the company that develops the Palm OS, and it looks like it will move to Windows Mobile 5.0. Engadget posted photos of the Treo 700w, here last week. There it was running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 5.0. Windows Mobile 5.0 is considered by some reviewers to be a step in the right direction for Vole, but otherwise don’t like it. Source: Inquirer

I always bought Palm, because it is not a Micrsoft OS. And I am just going out for 7 more. Now I have to rethink my goals. I am very disappointed. Its like giving Mike Brown the job of CEO of Red Cross. I will hold off, and force my IT to go somewhere else, or I just won’t buy.

I used Palm for years and tried phones, including the Treo that run Palm OS, but it’s shortcomings have become evident in an integrated device. Blackberry? Don’t get me started. I was also anti-MS for some time… After I got a Samsung phone runnning Windows Mobile I was convinced that this was indeed a quality piece of software from MS. Their desktop OS is garbage, but MS has a future with mobile devices if they continue to play their cards right. I am ready for the 700!

Well, I can synch my Palm smartphone with my Linux desktop just fine with KPilot. I think non-Windows/Mac users are out of luck.

‘converted’ says the PalmOS has “shortcomings” while apparently WindowsMobile has no shortcomings (maybe it has Longcomings? -insert horn here-).
Without specifics, ‘converted’ is just another Microsoft troll.
Want shortcomings? WindowsMobile uses MORE RAM, requires a higher-powered CPU, has a more awkward interface, and finally PalmOS can interface and sync to Linux and Mac OSX PCs effortlessly… try that with WinCE devices…
Finally, WindowsMobile is made by the company which has a near-monopoly over the desktop OS marketplace, a company which “integrates” everything and the kitchen sink in the base OS just to “cut the air supply” from competitors (see the internal emails in the DOJ vs. MSFT case), and the company which wants to force Digital Rights Management down the users’ throat.
Before going to WindowsMobile, I prefer to go back to payphones, pencil and paper.
