Opera is Now Free!?!?

By David Johnston

Opera BrowserWell, I woke up to quite a surprise this morning. Opera, who gave their browser away for free maybe a month ago is now giving it away for free permanently. This is great news for the browser wars as it gives people more options without having to dig into their wallets. Opera has moved away from selling their core browser and into selling only support services as well as Opera for mobile devices. While Opera may not have the popularity of Firefox (probably due in large part to it not being free) it does have much of the same security when compared to Internet Explorer and a couple neat features such as IRC and voice built into it. You can see a complete list of features here. Anyway, if you haven’t already checked Opera out, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t now. It’s free!

Get it here.

Opera is Going to be Free

Opera’s “Quick Preferences” allows it to identify itself as IE, which means I can use it at IE-preferred web sites, such as my employer’s. Firefox and the current Mozilla aren’t admitted to those sites, so I can’t use them to check my pay stubs or W2’s, for example.

I prefer to use only one browser, and I’d rather it not come from Microsoft. Opera’s fast, reliable, and now free.

Sure after I got those two free registration codes about a month ago, I was feeling happy with myself, Opera goes ahead and ruins it. Oh well another good, free, non-Microsoft browser out there.

    Opera Goes Free!

Opera is now freeware. Opera is a web browser, which is far older than Mozilla, and has a decent sized user-base. It has similar features to Firefox.

What effect will it have on Firefox?

I was incredibly happy to see them release Opera for free. I’ll likely continue using FF, but having another alternative out there can only be a Good Thing.

Well it took long enough! If they would have done this a long time ago (and I like Opera, don’t get me wrong)….

    I’ve turned. I’m a firefox person now, I suppose.
