RealTechNews
We’re noticing a growing trend here at RealTechNews where the computer is slowly being pulled out of the equation or at least made optional when it comes to communication between various devices. Digital cameras can print without touching a PC, this past week, we covered the SD card to SD card copier, and today, the FlashPoint ShareDrive allows you to share files between USB devices without a PC.

Xmultiple’s ShareDrive line of USB flash memory pen drives and can easily download and upload data files between a ShareDrive pen drive and any other USB Memory pen drive or any other USB memory peripheral such as computers and MP3 players. ShareDrives are small, lightweight devices and are powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and are available in 128k, 256k, 512k, 1GB and 2GB sizes.
-Share business files at lunch, while traveling or at meetings
-Transfer Mapping Software to your Vehicle
-Exchange or transfer data from one cell phone to another
-Download digital photos from your camera or most any USB equipped peripheral
-Swap MP3 music or photo files with friends at school, around town or at the office
-Teachers and Students - Exchange Class Lectures, assignments, research, etc. -
-Exchange business card, Catalogs or product sheets at trade shows electronically
-Make back-ups of other pen drive files or USB equipped peripherals.
We say: It’s a drag you have to charge it, but the concept is definitely heading the right direction, and at $115 for 512MBs, the premium over regular thumb drives is not too steep for the added functionality. i guess that means my MP3 player has grown up and is ready to mate with other objects…..More info Here. to bad you need the usb thing though, but hey - it is still sweet - can even use it just to offload pics from your camera onto it, so you can take more pictures - until you get to a computer to send them back

I think that’s becuase for the average person thier computer is the weak link in thier string of gadgets. Filled with spyware and viri, and sometimes having a difficult time detecting peripherals, people are afraid to try to hook thier new toy to thier PC. It makes me wonder how, if any, different people would feel about this if they had Macs instead of PCs. I suspect that the lack of spyware cripling the computer’s performance would help, but peripherals can still be less than easy for a layperson to setup.
