10 Firefox Extensions

Here are some more great FireFox extensions from the gang at TechRepublic.

RTN Reader “Keith” Adds: I believe all these extensions are available by searching at: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/?application=firefox (Thanks Keith - Alice)

1. ForecastFox
This extension provides weather information for your location in the Firefox status or tool bar. This information includes a radar image, current weather, and a weather forecast for the next few days. It’s also possible to customize the display with information on the current moon phase, sunrise and sunset times, wind speed, humidity and other information.

2. StumbleUpon
The StumbleUpon Firefox extension is an interface to collaborative browsing: it lets you rate sites as your browse them, add reviews, and view reviews submitted by other users. You can also browse sites by categories, send your favorite pages to friends with a single click, or invite others to view or review pages you’ve browsed.

3. GmailNotifier
This extension checks your Gmail account and notifies you if you have new mail (with a count of your unread mail messages in the Firefox status bar). You can configure the refresh interval, and automatically browse your Gmail mailbox by clicking the GmailNotifier icon.

I don’t use any of those extensions, and none of them appeal to me. I guess that’s the great thing about an extension-based browser — you get to chose what fits you. If I were stranded on a deserted island and could only take ten extensions with me, they would be:

    1. Adblock Plus. Nothing satisfies like comparing a web page in Internet Explorer and Firefox and seeing no blinking, annoying ads cluttering the Firefox presentation.

    2. Adblock Filterset.G Updater. Nothing satisfies like allowing a top notch guy to maintain your Adblock list, and have your list automatically updated to match. This updater is quality.

    3. googlebar. I love Google. I want their Googlebar. But this non-Google implementation is better than what Google came up with for Firefox.

    4. IE View. Like it or not, there are some pages that only work in Internet Explorer, and this extension allows me to automatically launch a page in my numero two browser.

    5. Remove It Permanently. Similar to Adblock, but this tool can remove HTML objects like table cells. I use this to eliminate entire columns, frames, etc.

    6. Tab Mix Plus. Provides more options to control tab behavior.

    7. Sort Extensions. If you have a lot of extensions, it is nice to be able to sort them alphabetically.

    8. View Source With. The default Firefox source view is pretty nice, but I want source to appear in my preferred text / programming editor… ConTEXT. This extension allows me to define whatever programs I want.

    9. Web Developer. Loaded with tools. The most frequent feature that I use is Disable JavaScript, which unfortunately applies to all tabs and windows, but does the trick for those rare times that I need it. I use the features that validate my HTML and CSS, and show form details.

    10. Customize Google. I use this extension to remove Google ads and default my Gmail login to https. I can’t figure out why portals like Yahoo even allow people to login without being in https. At least give us a preference saved in a cookie to always default to a secure login page.

    Well, here’s what I have:

    1) Greasemonkey
    2) Colorzilla - Bets taking a screenshot into Photoshop just to gank a few colors.
    3) TabBrowser Preferences
    4) Forecast fox - ‘Casuse hey … I don’t want to have to turn around and look out the window.
    5) Adblock
    6) Web Developer Toolbar
    7) downThemAll - Nice for grabbing a bunch of files from the same page.
    8) Show Failed URL - If you have error pages turned on instead of the popup boxes, it’ll show the failed URL (like if a site times out or something).

Plus a few other site-specific extensions.

In the order that the extensions show up on my Extensions menu:

    1) Browster (great for Google searches)
    2) Flashgot (let’s me use Free Download Manager with Firefox)
    3) fireFTP (easy way to upload a file or two to my website without having to start CuteFTP)
    4) Google Toolbar
    5) Favorites Converter (exports Bookmarks to IE Favorites for the times I need to use IE)

  6. Keith says:

Rob, I got very excited seeing the “Show Failed URL” extension you mention. One annoying aspect of Firefox has been launching a number of pages in separate tabs, and then one or more of them failing… with no indication of which failed, nor even the ability to refresh the tab to try again.

On Pike’s download page for that extension, it is noted that the extension will be obsolete in 1.5. So I think I’ll hold off until 1.5 goes golden and my extensions are updated (many already are with the first beta).
