How to Dig to China (or anywhere) Using Google Maps

When you were a little kid, were you concerned about where you would end up if you dug a very deep straight infinite hole on Earth? More than likely it’s not China at the very bottom of that sandbox. In fact, I would recommend bringing a life-jacket. Here is a cool Google Map application to answer that question.

Uhh…this is a cool little applet, but it doesn’t ACTUALLY show the “digging straight down” result. It seems to show the result of what would happen if you dug PARALLEL TO THE EARTH’S AXIS. (I live in North Carolina and ended up off the coast of Chile instead of drowning in the middle of the Indian Ocean!) My six-year-old’s toy globe helped me figure it out.
(Yes, I have too much time on my hands, apparently.)

Well, I wouldn’t rule out operator error! (Either that or some strange variation in the laws of physics in my back yard. Nah–probably operator error.)
