Samsung to Target Intel

While the rest of the world is going nuts over what we call the eBay Sk-hype, Samsung meanwhile has decided to quietly take on Intel. I have written many times that Samsung is the new Sony with its array of innovative devices, outstanding LCD screens, but I never thought about all those chips under the hood. Sound far far-fetched? Read this:
“Samsung Electronics Monday hinted that its next target is Intel Corp., the world’s biggest semiconductor maker headquartered in the United States. That veiled bid was launched by Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor business president and CEO Hwang Chang-gyu during the company’s annual press conference at the Hotel Shilla.
‘”We have our own plans for competition with Intel but we cannot reveal them in public, and you all are well aware that we are disinclined to talk about our projections on when we will emerge as the world’s biggest chipmaker,’’ Hwang said.
However, Hwang said the central processing unit (CPU) microprocessor market, roughly 85 percent of which is controlled by Intel, has already neared saturation point whereas flash memory segment _ Samsung’s specialty _ should sustain robust growth rates of over 70 percent in the coming decade as it has done in the past four years.” Source: The Korea Times
Our take: For years it has been AMD vs. Intel, but maybe the one to watch is Samsung after all. Very interesting….

Alan says:
I think Samsung sure has the capacity to overwhelm Intel.
Well, it is not only the biggest semi-conductor memory maker, but also it seems to be doing extremely well on the global market.
By the way, I am surprised that it is a Korean company, a giant one.
Never seen Korean company this big except for Hyundai and LG.
