Logitech Launches World’s 1st Wireless Digital Surround Sound System

1st Wireless Digital Surround Sound SystemWith Dual Wireless Rear Speakers, Logitech Z-5450 Digital System Combines Power and Cordless Freedom

No more running cables or tripping over speaker wires. Logitech, a leading manufacturer of multimedia PC speakers, today announced the world’s first THX-certified 5.1 speaker system with digital wireless dual rear speakers. The new Logitech Z-5450 Digital speakers, ideal for use with the living room entertainment center or the office PC, provide flexibility in setting up an instant surround-sound system. Each of the independent rear speakers can be placed anywhere within 8.5 meters (28 feet) of the speaker system control center, requiring only a power outlet; no unsightly speaker wires running around the room, yet no compromise on quality. With THX-certification and 315 watts of power, these speakers help create a theater-quality movie watching experience and provide enough thump to help people feel like they’re inside the game.

Logitech also extended its award-winning Z-series family of speakers to include the new Logitech® Z-4 speaker system: an affordable and stylish 2.1 system with a new three-driver satellite design that delivers great performance for listening to digital music on a computer or a portable music player.

“Historically, delivering high-quality sound wirelessly has been a major challenge,” said Ray Weikel, Logitech’s director of product marketing for audio. “The Z-5450 speakers master this challenge, while they alleviate the age-old nuisance of pulling up carpet or crawling through a home’s foundation just to hide speaker wire. These are powerful, high-performance speakers that deliver on the promise of the Z-series family name without compromise, yet add a whole new element of wireless flexibility to multimedia entertainment.”

Alice adds:
This is a relationship saver. When you see the amout of speaker wire in most TV rooms, you’ll know why this will solve many a conflict. Thank you Logitech. $499 coming this month. A small price to pay for peace in the home! Full Article: DigitalCamera@101reviews

    As soon as I finish this post I’m heading to Craigslist to sell my current z-640. I re-arranged my room months ago and the rear speakers have been disconnected because of the wiring issue. Thank you logitech!

    I can’t wait - I got new carpeting installed and though for a second about running really flat wire to my sound system, but I had a feeling that was a really bad idea - I have wires everywhere that I roll up when not watching DVDs. How sad is that?

    I cannot wait for this.

    Another concern I has was the frequency messing with my WiFI and 2.4GHz phones (I also have 5.8Ghz phomes), but read this:

    The Logitech Z-5450 Digital system uses digital 2.4 GHz wireless technology, with adaptive frequency hopping, to minimize any chance of interference. Any potential performance problems due to interference are virtually eliminated due to the fact that the system intelligently sends redundant wireless transmissions to each rear satellite; if one data stream is lost, a second identical stream is captured. And the Logitech dual wireless speaker solution has very low latency, less than 20 milliseconds, which is imperceptible to the human ear.

  5. Halcyondaze says:

    I think this is a great idea, however isn’t there going to be problems with interference from other 2.4ghz devices?
    Examples:
    Wireless Phones (2.4ghz)
    Wireless Networking
    Wireless Game Controllers / Keyboards / Mice
    Wireless Cameras

    All of these are at one friend’s house and he has nightmares already.

    Great idea, just need to put it on a different spectrum.

    Although the speakers aren’t purely wireless(they have to be getting power somehow), these are a major step forward. Logitech is hitting homeruns with their speaker lineup. Amazing. I love you Logitech!

  7. Mike says:

    Only the logic of women dictates that they choose a sound system not based on the sound quality, but rather based on how it looks. You go girls. Wireless speakers = amps built in to each speaker which means more things to go wrong. Of course that doesn’t matter as long as it looks “pretty” in the living room.

    Some great postings from Fark:

    Honey, watch out for the ethernet cable. It’s right there. *points to it* See? See the ethernet cable? It’s gray and it runs across this section of hallway right here. Are you watching? Okay then. Ethernet. Right there. Where’s the ethernet? Right! It’s right there. Don’t tell me to fark off, I’m making a point.

    And then 15 minutes later she trips over it. What is it with women?!
    ===================

    Try living with four networked computers, two radios, two VCR’s, a printer, scanner, fans, a PDA dock, lights, two digital cameras, two MP3 players two keyboards, two mice (that I know of), three power strips, two USP’s, and a four-way KVM switch, plus a foot massager and heating pad. The only thing I don’t have plugged in is my wireless headphones, and even they require a recharging stand. And that is just in one room. Don’t get me started on the living room and the home theater setup. (I actually passed up a great deal on a DVD recorder with a 120G hard drive just because I couldn’t face the prospect of tearing into all those cables, wires and cords and re-configuring them all.)

    Want wireless, need wireless, cannot live much longer without it.

    Love that frequency switching thing; wish I had it on my headphones so I’d stop picking up pron from my neighbor. At least I hope it’s pron.

    /Do hate wireless phones, though.

    //Not bragging about all my stuff — most of it is obsolete crap, bought on ebay cheep. Moving soon, may end up dumping most of it back on ebay.

    In A/V circles this has long been known as the WAF or Wife Acceptance Factor.

    ==============

    It’s not just the wife, under-2’s want to play with/trip on ethernet cables, speaker wire and everything else I happen to have plugged in (Home Theatre, 6 PC’s, phones,consoles etc… I wish I wasn’t renting so I could hide all the cables in the walls!!

    ==============

    THIS WILL NOT INTERFEAR WITH YOUR OTHER WIRELESS DEVICES

    A cordless phone, wireless router, microwave and these speakers all have a frequency in the 2.4 range NOT exactly 2.4

    A seperation of about 24mhz on any of these devices will reduce any interference to near 0. The only device in the above list with a single channel is the microwave and it is a focused beam with lots of sheilding.

    How am I so sure? I know the guy who wrote the Orielly book on wireless networking personally.

    =============

    Sigh.

    Friend of mine got a new HTiaB the other day.

    His wife, for whatever reason hates ANYTHING past mono. She says that when she hears birds behind her it “freaks” her out and she hates surround sound, but she “lets” her husband have a surround system. Their old one was a traditional wired one. The new one, has “wireless” rear speakers, yet it has to be plugged in with a traditional powercord. I say it isn’t wireless in the true sense, she says it is and it “looks” great because of no speaker wire, yet it has a very heavy and thick power cord dangling down and plugged into a wall socket.

    Sigh.

    $500 for a set of speakers????? Nope, not for me. My old thirty-something dollar Altec Lansing AVS500 speakers (analog and 4.1) work just fine for me. What is it with the price of computer and home entertainment speakers these days? Markup has to be several thousand percent for most of them.

    As a geek who’s not afraid to re-wire an entire house, including cable/phone network drops in multi-story dwellings, this ROCKS!

    I love the idea that I can install the system in 15 minutes without crawling under the house (or in the attic) to run new wires.

    September 9th, 2005 at 6:18 am

  12. David Johnston says:

    I still have to agree with some people’s concerns, though, that the “wireless” speakers still need a power connection so they’re not truly wireless.

    On the other hand, having multiple amps will of course make the system more complex, but it will also take some of the load off of one central amp so you won’t have to worry so much about heat at high volumes for prolonged periods of time. I know from experience that the amp on my Z-680’s can get veeeery hot sometimes.
