eBay to buy Skype?

This is an odd choice for a company that does auctions and payments (PayPal). I guess I am not seeing the “Synergy” as they say, even though I have been a huge fan of Skype since it first launched. But here is the info:

“eBay Inc. is in talks to buy Internet-telephone company Skype Technologies SA for $2 billion to $3 billion, according to a published report. A spokeswoman for Skype declined to comment Thursday on the Wall Street Journal report. Earlier this year, the industry was abuzz after a British newspaper reported that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. had explored a $3 billion offer for the company, which was founded by a Swedish entrepreneur.” Source: Business Week Online via AP

Our Guess: Maybe you can Skype people and curse them out for free when your item doesn’t arrive, or get a call via Skype when you are the high bidder that just got outbid? Any other ideas?

    Skypeout credits via PayPal.

    Seriously — with the flagging PayPal income from non-Ebay sources because of people avoiding them due to relatively high fees and apparently strange and arcane rules, PayPal really need more/better stream of income to thrive. What better way than Skypeout credits?
