Age of Empires 3 Demo Released At Last!

RealTechNews.com

I am officially beside myself. When we launched Gamecenter for CNET.com back in the day we picked Age of Empires as Game of the year and got jeers from sites that liked games that quickly faded into the sunset. We knew that Age had it all, great graphics, multiplayer fun and even easter eggs.

So without further ado, here’s info on the demo. We covered the amazing graphics in a much earlier posting if you want to read up or just start downloading

“The demo is roughly 550MB installed, and the download is a hefty 375MB. You can grab it from the usual suspects like Microsoft (rather busy at the moment), FilePlanet and FileShack.

“There are two missions in the single player mode available, and in single player skirmish mode you can play as the Spanish in Texas, or the British in New England.” Source: Arstechnica

I will create a torrent of the demo (in about six weeks when it finishes downloading). MS got hammered, we could use a cache of some sort here (anyone?).

I snared at copy at 2:00AM. Can I host it on my site or is that illegal?

I think as long as you say the appropriate chant MS won’t mind. I now have a torrent (possibly broken) on my website (points finger).

I downloaded it. Beware…it requires a more sophisticated graphics card than the earlier version. It doesn’t work well on my older computer….

When I loaded it on my newer computer, a Dell Inspiron 9200, five months old, it first said that it wouldn’t work, because it needed 1.2 GHz, and my comp had only 600 MHz…actually it has 1.6 GHZ…an ominous start, but then it did load, but the cursor wouldn’t stop flickering (it’s a laptop–perhaps it would work better with my mouse). Anyway, I’m glad I was able to try it before wasting money on it. Too bad, cuz I love Age of Empires…

I’ve never actually played AoE, but everyone says it’s great. Maybe I’ll try it this time around if it still gets good reviews.

To be honest, AOE 2 is one of only a few games I still play and enjoy [mostly because of the editor] along with Total Annihilation. So I am looking forward to this.

Just finished the download - also got the flickering mouse pointer which is very annoying. Running a “Leadtek 6600GT” video card with the latest drivers installed so I know the problem isn’t limited to laptop users (unfortunately).

The flickering mouse problem is solved by turning off pointer trails.

The demo crashes on me constantly. I made it through the first of two maps but couldn’t get through the second without crashing multiple times. Reinstalled and now it crashes before I can get through the first map!
