Steve Jobs Called: He Wants His Hardware Back

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

Alice’s Rant of the Week: So I’m sitting here thinking about the iPhone and how Apple potentially made a serious strategic blunder by not doing the hardware itself. I mean, that’s what Apple does well and even though Motorola is doing better now with the Razr, the new iPhone looks ugly and featureless to me. (100 songs?) And it turns out I am not alone. Check out what RedHerring had to say:

“A track downloaded from iTunes, on the other hand, is only $0.99, meaning all those players would have much less to share. If Apple develops its own phones and sells the devices through its own phone service, it can keep all the profits to itself. “We question Apple’s motive to partner with Motorola and not make any money when they themselves are a hardware manufacturer,” said Mr. Munster. “We believe that if the long-term threat to iPods is a cell phone/MP3 player combo, Apple should make its own iPod phone, turning the threat into an opportunity.” Such a phone piqued the interest of 200 consumers surveyed by Piper Jaffray. The analysts said their research indicated 18 percent interest in an Apple-made cell phone, and that consumers would be willing to pay $255 for one.” Source: Red Herring

Alice Says: Sounds like this is a Lemon, not an Apple

I definitely agree with you Alice. This phone is far from adequate and when compared to other phone+mp3 combos like Nokia N91, I don’t think this is “Apple”.

I really think they blew it - the design is tired looking and not the sleek inoovative look and feel Apple usually offers for a premium.

Apple makes iTunes for mac and PC, so arguably, they have a strategy for not making the entire package around the purchase of any particular individual track.

That aside, phones will be a significant platform for QuickTime, which in turn, will drive sales of Apple software and hardware.

Why jeopardize that by pissing off the entire mobile phone industry with an end-run over a few pennies that likely are also sitting on a computer whose bits and bytes have already passed through Apple’s servers anyway? And what carrier is going to risk partnering with Apple and dissing the hardware manufacturers?

Agreed. The phone may be a bit uninspired, but unless I’m mistaken, this seems like a first-to-market situation. I think there is a phone or two that can play mp3s, but nothing quite like the Apple/Motorola. Perhaps partnering with Motorola allows Apple to test the market without a big investment. The feedback they receive from the Motorola will help them get it right the first time when they offer their own product.

Doesn’t it seem like the iPod Nano is just a half-step away from becoming a phone? When I first saw the Motorola I immediately considered getting it. Only thing holding me back is my reluctance to let go of my Nokia with the fold out keyboard.

I have been doing research and companies can do what are caled “private label” deals with cell carriers, so Apple can look like it is offering a wireless services in its stores and online, but the network is really Sprint or Verizon or whatever. I also get that this is a first to market concept, but I have a Svery sleek amsung P777 that plays MP3s and this design is just so ugly and chunky looking, I was shoked Appple would experiminet with a product that doesn’t have that instant drool factor it manages to produce at every unveiling. I personally refuse to pay .99 per song, so am anit-iPod until they come out with a model like Yahoo’s unlimited music download store, but just like the Mac mini, when I saw the nano I just wanted it no matter wgar. When I saw the phone, let’s just say no one was home.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I live in the real world, where Apple, iPod, and iTunes rule the market. The market share has continued to grow for iTunes-run products, not shrink.

If you don’t want to pay 99 cents a song, go buy the CD — if you can find it for cheaper. iTunes Music Store has already proven itself the major music outlet — people are buying — and so an iTunes phone makes serious sense. No, it’s not an iPod phone. But it’s a first step into the phone market, which is big for further selling Apple and iTunes to the world (just think, people who buy the ROKR might actually go buy a iPod too! And songs!).

For those of you looking for the full rundown on the product, check out my Motorola/Apple ROKR coverage, which has all the details & specs in one place. (I haven’t seen anyone else talking about the memory card!)

for the ui,its by far the most convenient from other fones considering motorola is by far THE ONLY MOBILE IN THE WORLD IN WHICH YOU CAN LOCK CRTAIN ITEMS IN THE MENU WHILE OTHERS ARE OPEN,and this is very convenient for persons privacy.

the screen is so wonderful, its a steps in advance of the se 750,and i experiment personaly the both mobiles.
for the contacts menu, its so rich and user friendly, you have 1000 different entries, and i think this is convenient to buisness men.

sms and mms and email client is so far away ahead of all fones,i use this every day,and never had any problems with it.
the short cuts are so variable, this gives you many choices to arrange it as you like with optimum time saving.
for the yunes and mp3,i think who used this fone knows what i have in mind, its surround speakers and speaker are LOUD enough to hear the music and ROCK too,the voice speaker is grade A,even in traffic jam,and i also experienced this personally.

for the camera and video, keep in mind when you make a comparison that you are talking of cellular fone which adjust every picture you take in the final format to use in mms and its 640*480,which is about 40 mb only,so what is the need for the 2 or 4 or 6 megapixel camera for the fone?
going to the fone mmc,its 256,and i think no need to comment on this too.

finally for the battery life,i used this fone for 2 days in a massive way,and the battery still alive.
final conclusion is having the bluetooth for sending and receiving files from and out of this fone concerning the previous points i mentioned, makes this fone no.1 either for its wonderful FEATURE AND ITS RICH MENUE OR FOR ITS CLASSY SHAPE AND MONEY FOR VALUE.
