Is the “Quantum Optical” Atom Chip a New CPU Rival?
By John Tintle
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews
Today I found a company who claims to present a 6.8GHz CPU laptop at the 2006 CES(Consumer Electronics Show). Atom Chip Corporation is promoting it’s Atom Chip SG220-2 wireless laptop, which they claim will ship with a 6.8 GHz CPU, 1 terabyte(1000 gigabytes) of RAM, and 2 terabytes of storage. Notice how I said storage instead of a hard drive. That’s because Atom Chip isn’t using a hard drive they are using a solid state system. A few other points: Atom Chip claims it will ship the laptop with 2 Operating Systems (Windows XP Pro and a Linux Distribution), DVD Super Multi, 12.1 inch WXGA TFT Glare Type LCD display with 1.3 Mega pixel CMOS camera, two Integrated graphic controllers [Intel855GME internal graphics, support Intel DVMT (Dynamic Video Memory Technology) and Atom Chip DVM (Dynamic Video Memory)] and a 10/100 Base-T LAN.
John’s 2 Cents:
All I can say is wow! I think this is great and will be an industry changing product. I have always hoped some CPU maker would come up with a working optical-based CPU, and it seems that Atom Chip is one of the first. I think the optical based CPUs are the wave of the future, they are extremely fast and have a low heat signature, with plenty of room for expansion. As for the solid state storage module, I’ve heard about this for a couple of years and have been waiting patiently. Since solid state storage is a way to conserve power and lower the amount of heat in your computer but it is also quiet. Now more listening to your hard drives spin up. I think Atom Chip is going to start the ball rolling towards optical based CPUs, they may not lead it for very long, but it’s a start. Plus you have to love a company that ships a Linux distribution alongside of Windows. I’d love to hear what you all think of the technologies potential, and the laptop itself.
Alice Adds: There has been a lot of speculation on the web about the validity of the Atom chip. My comment is to wait and see if its the real deal when its unveiled at CES. Here’s what The Register had to add along those lines: “The Quantum II is the brainchild of Westbury, New York-based Shimon Gendlin, who runs Atom Chip and Compu-technics, and whose “magneto quantum-optical” discoveries are enshrined in US patent 5,841,689 filed in November 1996 and granted in November 1998. According to the Compu-technics website, Gendlin has won numerous awards for his work in his specialism, including a “gold oskar” from Bulgaria, a World Intellectual Property Organisation “East-West Euro Intellect” gold medal, an International Salon of Industrial Property, Moscow Archimedes medal, a Japanese “World Genius Convention” plaudit and many more. We must admit, we’re a trifle sceptical, but Gendlin has his patent - and more pending, apparently - and so we look forward to seeing Atom Chip’s kit in the flesh at CES. The company is scheduled to demonstrate its wares on Booth 36604″ –’Nuff said.

If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. If this computer is for real then I will make a prediction: I won’t be able to afford it.

Isn’t Win Xp limited to 16 GIGs of ram support, and this peoplke are claiming 1 terabyte? Also, from what I remember Microsoft always throws a fit when ever a company tries to bundle another OS with/instead of theirs.

WAO… is all i can say.. just incredible… too good for being real. well then if all that they claim is true, then it is a really wonderfull thing, but hell they claim that they will sell ram modules as cheap as USD $2.00 ???? or i missread? hell thats a hell cheap than anything i konw. lets hope this is for real and the dream of all gamers can come true =)

They were selling the ram for $2.50 per 1 GB in 1000 GB modules

Well I will leave it at this. If the claims are true, the optical chip claims in particular, then we must endeavor to remember that GHz isn’t all or intel would womp AMD in every benchmark. I must admit the thing that really makes me skeptical about this is the fact that it apparently run x86 software. To do this it would either have to emulate the instruction set, or have that built into the chip. Licensing the instruction set is not easy… Intel just doesn’t hand out the latest x86 instruction set. I could go on, but I’m sure that others can see areas that should be scrutinized thoroughly.

I have to admit, i was too astonished by the incredible features of the notebook to notice it was a hoax:( Euphoria lasted for about 12 hours.
I would assume you would need a lot of scientists, infrastructure and time to develop a thing like that.
Shimon Gendlin’s company, it seems, can not afford even a decent website. If you are investing millions in a project like that you can afford (actualy you) to spend some money on PR, wouldn’t you agree? You just cant develop things like that in your garage.
Shimon Gendlin - a very strange name for a russian emigrant. He just cant be russian with a name like that or at least the odds of that are very slim.
It seems this is one of the awards Mr Gendlin has recieved

The website lists a auggeted retail price between $8,500 - $15,000. If this is real, it’s a toy for the uber rich or those willing to drive themselves into debt. But I find it hard to believe that any bank will authorize a $15,000 loan for a computer. And the pessemist in me says it’s a hoax.
Admitedly though, I want this to be true.

It’s a hoax, be sure. I know a few guys who worked with Shimon. They can tell quite a few interesting things about his “invention”.

I also believe this is a hoax. The website is VERY poorly designed. I did read where they wrote that mods to windows XP were made to get this chip technology to work. But, I don’t remember microsoft allowing stuff like this with their software. Correct me if I am wrong.
Okay, last! If there is 1TB of ram then why would we even need the 2TB’s of storage. I would mod that ram to act as a RAM drive of some sort. Plus, there is NO real reason why anyone on this planet would need or use 1000GB’s of ram. It is a waste of money to even have 50GBs of memory. Sure servers can come with 16GBs of memory. If this technology was to really exist, they would NOT put it on notebooks, they would put it on servers first. The damand for server storage technology has MUCH more profit than us!
Okay, that’s all I have to say

Well for servers there are still “ordinary” motherboards, CPU’s, Hard Disks and RAM. Why not the laptops? Don’t U guys love to have an extremely performant LAPTOP all the time on you? Small but powerfull, portable… What else do I need? Some highly trained bodyguards to protect me when going out with that machine. http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thundern4250qe.html
I think this is enough for right now.
