Sirius Launches First Portable Version Satellite Radio Called S50

When I wrote my detailed how-to on installing a Sirius satellite radio in your car, I chose the cheapie StarMate model for one very important reason: I knew that Sirius was behind in the hardware category and would have better and better products on the way as the year went on. I also drive a scooter to work, and setting up the StarMate would have been possible but not very practical - I wanted a Walkman style receiver.

Today my prayers have been answered with the new Sirius S50 - a time shifting TiVo like unit that records up to 50 hours of your favorite channels. Doesn’t get any better than that. Only hitch: it’s $359 vs. $99 for my cheapie and you need to be connected to a docking station get a live signal. Source: Orbitcast via Gizmodo

“Sirius has unveiled its first wearable satellite radio! The SIRIUS S50 lets you capture and store up to 50 hours of SIRIUS content, or a mix of SIRIUS programming with MP3/WMA files, enabling listening on the go.

“The SIRIUS S50 measures just 1.9 by 3.9 inches and 0.7 inches thick, and includes a full color display, sleek black exterior and voice-assisted channel navigation. When attached to a home dock, car dock or executive docking station, the SIRIUS S50 provides easy access to live content, and captures and stores both scheduled and unscheduled SIRIUS programming. This feature allows users to listen to SIRIUS content anywhere.

It’s not a satellite radio. It’s a Satellite recorder that allows you to play back three of your favorite stations “pre-recorded”. Thanks, but no thanks. I can record Sirius off the web and dump it to my mp3 player, which this thing really is. An expensive mp3 player.

Good point. It’s more like taking yyour MP3s on the road with you, which is fine with me. No commercials!

They think they’re in first. XM released one last Christmas, and it does NOT require a docking station or computer.
