Hitachi Unveils The World’s First Terabyte DVD Recorder

First the good news: Hitachi has created the biggest King Kong PVR of all time (until the next guy comes along and tops it.) The bad news: they won’t be selling it in the US and Europe, because PVR demand is low. We say: Dumb move. PVRs, like text messaging are catching on in the United states and high end junkies cannot get enough PVR storage. (I know I can’t - Alice)
Some facts from Reuters:
“Hitachi Ltd. unveiled the world’s first hard disk drive/DVD recorder that can store one terabyte of data, or enough to record about 128 hours of high-definition digital broadcasting. Hitachi, Japan’s largest electronics conglomerate, is still a relatively small player in the DVD recorder market, trailing industry leaders Matsushita Industrial Co. Ltd., Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp.. But it hopes its new line-up, which also includes models able to store 160 gigabytes, 250 gigabytes and 500 gigabytes of data, will help boost its market share and turn its loss-making DVD recorder business profitable in October-March, the second half of the business year.
“Hitachi said it did not have concrete plans for launching the products in overseas markets, explaining that consumers in Europe and the United States were not as keen on high-end recorders.” Source: Reuters

The main reason USA or Canadian “geeks have been slow to buy available PVR is low storage capabilities.If you wanted to store anything large or store a large number of recordings you had to transfer recordings to DVDs;you might as well just use your computer.With a terrabyte ,now you’re talking storage;burning to DVDs once a week for files you really,really want to keep……………… .
