Download Internet Explorer 7 Beta Today

By Alice Hill
RealTechNews

I will say up front that I abandoned Internet Explorer once I discovered that a simple FireFox tweak made my browser act like a chipmunk on crack.

We also covered:
FireFox Hacks
Portable FireFox

But today it’s IE’s day to shine. RTN contributors will weigh in here shortly, but in the meantime, you can check it out yourself. Post your opinion when you’ve kicked the tires.

Download it Here
Note: RTN reader “Oldster” pointed out that the download is in the RAR format. But not to worry. Contributing Writer John Tintle had this to say: “For RAR files just download WinRAR. There is a trial version at http://www.rarlab.com/index.htm Thanks to both - Alice

· New tools to take you directly to the information you want through support for Web feeds (RSS) that includes automatic discovery of web feeds (RSS) on Web pages, basic Web Feed (RSS) reading capabilities, and basic support for saving Web feeds (RSS) as a new kind of favorite.
· Platform enhancements for developers to improve compatibility and manageability, including improved support for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) as well as transparent PNG support.

Also - for a FireFox tweak I just discovered:

    Speed up load time
    • Firefox is slow to load initially on Windows XP. You can speed this up a bit by using XP’s built in prefetcher. Simply right-click on the Firefox icon you use to start the browser. Add the text /Prefetch:1 to the end of the line in the target field.

The whole line should look something like the following:
    “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” /Prefetch:1

That link goes to a RAR file so if you can’t open RAR files don’t bother to download it.

I’ve installed the beta and all I have to say is I wish I hadn’t. I know it’s a beta, but it seems way too flaky to be called that. Maybe an advanced alpha.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to uninstall the thing and Windows System Restore won’t work either. :(

A free unzip utility that works with zip, rar and ace formats can be found at http://www.herve-thouzard.com/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=4

If the link doesn’t work, just do a search for unzipthemall

It may be wise to wait until MS releases IE 7 Beta to the public. It is only in Beta for developers right now, and downloading it from any place other than microsoft.com is a risk I’m not willing to make…

Downloaded, installed and tried IE7 with no problems. Reaction? Yawn.

    I’ll stick with Firefox.

Olster - write up a quick paragraph on why it’s a yawn and I’ll post a mini review for people who aren’t willing to try the beta.

TUGZip is sweet and is on par with the infamous W..Zip. I have been using TUGZip for months and it works with LOADS of formats including the RAR.

I have my IE 6 loaded with extras, does the new version connect these also or do I need to re-install everything , AdvancedSeaechBar, google, copernit meta, smart whois, and half dozen other tools?
I would expect that MS would not allow us to go back to 6.0.
MS is about what they want, not what we want:
Like the auto updates, that eat up disk space for their media player, I should be charging MS rent for all the space their patches take up on my hard drives.
And some of the media player stuff has nothing to do with security, so I refuse to use theirs.

And MS has the capability to force downloads, that means every MS OS, has a backdoor, we also need security to watch MS programs and what MS programs are doing.

Can we even close the MS backdoor if we wanted to? I don’t trust MS.

  16. Oldster says:

OK, Alice. Here it is for what its’s worth. Feel free to edit/tinker.

The “yawn factor” of IE7 comes from the fact that it has the usual soft, mushy feel of the “old” IE, likely because of bloated code, and really doesn’t offer anything that Firefox hasn’t had all along in the form of extensions that the user can choose rather than being force fed. Microsoft has always had the policy of making the user’s decisions, almost always to the detriment of the user. IE7 is not an excepton. The interface is not as intuitive as either Firefox or Opera and the Links bar is hidden off to the right by default—bad for me because I prefer the Links bar to the Favorites dropdown. I also had trouble placing links on the Links bar. It simply refused to accept dragging and dropping them.

I have no way to test the security of this new version but am sceptical, given MS history and the bloated code of IE7. (The RAR file is 10 MB and RAR is an efficient compression method. The unpacked code must be around 28 MB. Firefox, as I have it installed ,complete with several extensions, is less than 16 MB) Bloated code means holes and it won’t be long before they are found and exploited.

So, yawn sums it up. Same old, same old with maybe more security, maybe not. Firefox still wins.

Похотливо облизав нежным гибким розовым язычком свой ловкий тонкий пальчик они неспешно начинают ласкать свое гибкое божественно красивое тело.
