The Interesting OZiQ All-in-one-PC

By Martin A. Regtien
Contributing Writer, RealTechNews
From my own backyard (Western Australia) comes this clever beauty: a padded LCD screen that contains all a modern desktop should have and saving the environment a bundle. The OZiQ (of course pronounced as Aussie-i-Q), developed by Tucana Innovations, uses only one third of all material that goes into building a standard PC! Less waste and more space on your desk.
They seem to have solved the problem of magnetic interference on the LCD monitor by the hard drive and whilst the 15” screen is a bit on the small side for my personal use, a 17 incher is planned to be available soon. What I particularly like is the lack of wires that normally clutter the backs of standard desktops and the fact that it uses only half the electricity of the big box PCs.
We’re planning to get a review unit in soon to bring you the nitty gritty of the OZiQ. We shall have some pricing and availability for you shortly as well. Source: Digitalreviews.net

This is nothing different than a PC rip-off of an iMac.

I am very surprised that this has been labeled “innovative” in the post’s headline. It took the Windows world a full year to co-opt Apple’s brilliance? Y a w n . . .

I thoyght we were trying to move away from the traditional ps/2, serial and parallel ports. Looks nifty. Anyone want to leak specs and/or pricing???

Magnetic interference of the LCD? Huh? Magnets don’t to squat to them.
It seems more likely that electrical noise from the motor (or something) messed up the signal. I’ve definitely seen in crappy analog LCD monitors (like the CTX my company bought for me). Why you would use an analog connection on an all-in-one like that is beyond me, though.

We’ve got a few of these floating around the office as demo’s from a company called MPC (formerly MicronPC). I like the speed of the all-in-one, and combined with the 17″ LCD you have yourself a pretty sweet machine. I also like the TV-Tuner, Optical Audio Out, S-Video Out,7-USB Slots, and Integrated Speakers / Subwoofer (Actually sounds really good!).

And so….. what happens if the monitor goes bad? This thing kind of reminds me of those “all-in-one” stereo systems that were so popular back in the ’70s. Either that or a combined VCR-Television. Not really a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket.

“Innovative” What a joke. With such a poor and deceptive headline, I think this site is going to be removed from my RSS feed.

Jeffrey - how about Intriguing? I thought innovative because of the interference issue and heat, but you may be right on the word choice. Don’t dump our feed - we need your comments!

Martin,
This is a pathetic article.
I went to http://www.oziq.com.au/ and it is clear (to me) that this product is VAPORWARE.
No mention of details: CPU, disk, price, etc. But, I do love the “Completely Upgradable using Standard PC Components”. Do these people think I fell off teh turnip truck last night?
Also, I think Gateway did this product at least 3 years ago and I have an Apple iMac on my desk.
When I go to: http://www.gateway.com/products/gconfig/proddetails.asp?seg=sb&system_id=prf55sb, I get details.
When I go to: http://www.apple.com/imac/, I get details.

P.S. Martin, do not give up your “day job”. And, if this is you day job, then Alice should fire you for incompetence.

Dave - easy on poor Martin. This was his first posting and he said in the article that he intends to test and review he product when it comes in. I also posted this piece for him and wrote the “innovative”headline, whichIi changed to “interesting” but keep in mind that Martin said:
“We’re planning to get a review unit in soon to bring you the nitty gritty of the OZiQ. We shall have some pricing and availability for you shortly as well.”
Martin runs a great blog called http://www.digitalreviews.net (please check it out) and we are honoured to have him here.

What I’d love to see Martin do is compare this to the current all-in-one LCD iMacs, which have had these problems solved for a while. It certainly looks to be much slimmer than any of the other Windows-based all-in-one LCD units — at least from my memory.

Martin says:
Folks, I’m well aware that iMacs and other implementations of the same concept are out there and, yes, I was not thrilled with the moniker “innovative” either.
However, I’ve since spoken with the CEO of the company that designed the OZiQ and there are certain aspects in the OZiQ All-in-one box that will be substantially different from any similar computers. One them them is a touch screen for kiosk applications.
I should have a unit on my desk within a few weeks and will keep you guys posted. Of course, nothing beats an iMac, right?
Cheers,
Martin

Well… not vaporware anymore. I had a play with one of these last night. Didn’t get a lot of time on it, but it looks the goods. This one was specced out to your standard P4 3.2Ghz, sitting behind a 15″ LCD panel. 512Mb DDR RAM, upgradable to 2Gb… um, what else? DVD-RW, onboard sound (inc. notebook-ish speakers), onboard graphics (I think 19″ and above are meant to have seperate graphics card.)
That’s about it for the moment… looks like your average 15″ LCD monitor sitting on your desk and about the same size, so if nothing else, it’s a space saver for the office!
The website is a bit lacking, though… at least a list of dealers would be good (I know they definitely have some across Western Australia now.)

Purchased 40+ OZiQ 17″ AMD Based barebones. All have horrible display issues when running at 1280×1024 seems like magnetic interference. or some kind of electrical interference is causing constant visible wavy scanline type movements. Are there any LCD/Monitor drivers to compensate for this issue? Tried the latest VGA drivers with no success. There are no Monitor drivers included with the Driver cd therefore having a monitor that is not installed properly.

I received one of these as a present from a relative. After a month or so the screen flickers. The computer works fine, but the constant flickering is bothersome. Is there a fix to this? Or is system not worth the time and expense. Ant comments? Thanks.
