Hack Speed Passes for Free Gas

With gas prices on the rise I think everyone should be aware of this new hack. Not so you can get free gas (you naughty people) but so you can protect yourself against this. Speed passes and car key immobilizers use RFID.
” Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) is a general term for small, wireless devices that emit unique identifiers upon interrogation by RFID readers.”
So basicly Speed Passes are simply wireless barcodes. So anyone with a laptop, a microreader and a serial cable could extract your codes from your speed pass or your car key while sitting next to you for only a couple seconds. Once they have that they would be able to use a DST simulation device connected to laptop to wave infront of the Speed Pass pad at a gas station and get a full tank at your expense. I saw this coming when they first announced this technology. And this is yet another reason why I’m against a National I.D. Card system with RFID. Just imagine the identity theft to happen with a hacker and a laptop parked by a place of business like a bank or the Post Office collecting thousands of RFID codes every day……….. Some things are just better left alone…..

They can hack mine all they want… the credit card I have associated with my SpeedPass was reported stolen a month ago and I didn’t update my credit card info yet (I rarely buy XOM fuel anymore).
