Irony Alert: Official Skype Video Conferencing Feature Demonstrated With Exceptionally Boring Video Conference
By David Johnston

I just watched a fairly long and mostly boring webcast that focused on Skype. It features Nikklas Zennstrom and Tim Draper who talked about business prospects (which look very good) and demonstrated an in-house development version of Skype that allows for video calls. In fact, the entire interview was conducted using the video feature being shown. From what I can tell, the webcam picture is smooth and the quality seems very good. Since the webcast itself is so boring and long, I took a screenshot that lets you see the video in action. That’s Tim Draper on the left and Nikklas Zennstrom on the right, and you can see that the video is being run through an experimental Skype client. View the screenshot here. If you want to listen to the whole webcast, you can watch it here. I’m excited about this new feature, but in the meantime, I’ve been using vSkype which works very well for video conversations over Skype.

Just a silly thought. But has anyone suggested a single standard so Skype users can communicate with other like packages, such as Dingotel? Without paying any kind of switching fee?

David Johnston says:
Actually, other standards (such as SIP) were mentioned in the webcast. They said that Skype really wasn’t interested in other standards from its own because they would place constraints on Skype that can be overcome by its own protocol. That’s their current stance at least.
