Internet Explorer 7 Expected to Fail Internet Standards Acid2 Test

I almost forget that people still use Internet Explorer (how great is that to say after the browser wars back in the day?!) But there’s word coming down straight from Microsoft that IE7 won’t pass the Web Standards Project’s Acid2 test.

“In its browser blog, Microsoft acknowledged that IE 7 would not pass the Web Standards Project’s Acid2 test, which examines a browser’s support for W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) recommendations including CSS1 (Cascading Style Sheets), HTML4 and PNG (Portable Network Graphics). “We will not pass this test when IE7 ships,” Chris Wilson, lead program manager for the Web platform in IE, wrote in the IE blog. “We fully recognize that IE is behind the game today in CSS support. We’ve dug through the Acid2 test and analyzed IE’s problems with the test in some great detail, and we’ve made sure the bugs and features are on our list–however, there are some fairly large and difficult features to implement, and they will not all sort to the top of the stack in IE7.”

“Standards advocates and Web developers have criticized Microsoft for letting Internet Explorer go without a significant upgrade for years. This spring it became clear that Microsoft would finally address longstanding standards-compliance issues in its planned version 7 upgrade.” Source: ZDNet

Our verdict: Microsoft will shrug and not care one bit. Are you surprised?

Honestly … as much as it’d be cool to see IE7 pass Acid2 I’m not entirely concerned about it. No current browser (save for a development branch of Safari) passes the Acid2 test. Opera is close, but again, only in development. Firefox doesn’t, though it’s a goal. I’d imagine there’s a lot of regression testing to do for all of these browsers, even when the code is finally up to snuff. And if the IE team simply sticks to their word and thoroughly fixes everything they say they will it will still be a good thing for web developers. And whose to say that they won’t ramp up development to the point where they’re releasing periodic upgrates to IE’s rendering? It’s obvious that they see FF et al as competitors, and they can’t have that! So we shall indeed see…

Anon, Firefox, Opera and Safari all released even though they don’t pass Acid2.

The test is more of a wish-list than a standards compliance test.

The Acid2 test is a simple benchmark that will divide browsers in obsolete browsers and modern standard compliant browsers. Either you see the happy face or not, there is no inbetween.

I predict that in the future You will in the future web developers will not bother to support browsers that doesn’t comply with the acid2 test, especially for none-ie browsers. In that respect the acid2 test is important and not just a wish list.

In the future, webbrowsing will shift to mobile platforms where IE or other major browsers, yet, has no dominance. A simple test that everybody can understand will ensure that several browsers can coexists without the overhead of developers manually checking the layout on each browser.
