Netflix About to Launch Movie Downloading Service

I have been a fan of NetFlix since it launched, but lately have grow tired of all the mailing back and forth. When my company planned a trip last month to the Galapagos that essentially left me on a boat with no phone or Internet, a very strict luggage weight limit, I thought about loading up on the DVDs, but opted instead to download a few flicks from MovieLink instead. Movielink, if you haven’t used it is a great download rental service that has all the makings of a hit if the studios would just let it fill up with top hits and new releases, instead of a slightly more shall we say, esoteric collection.
Now it looks like Netflix is getting into the same boat. Downloading will beat all that red envelope mailing, but until someone can unlock the studios and set this category free, I wouldn’t see this as a major hit just yet. Here’s the info:
“Netflix is poised to test its long-awaited Internet movie download service, which would broaden its rental business beyond its current DVDs-by-mail offering and fulfill the promise of its name. Well-placed industry sources confirmed Friday that the Los Gatos company is close to launching an on-demand rental service that is paired with a Netflix-provided television set-top box.
‘”We have said we’re committed to testing a product this year and we expect the test to be of a very modest nature,'’ said Netflix spokesman Ken Ross, who declined to discuss the timing of the launch or the nature of the service. A pair of software glitches on the Netflix site apparently displayed references to the download service. That was detected by Netflix customers and published in recent weeks by blogs devoted to the company, providing hints that it was preparing to launch a download service.
“Netflix and TiVo announced last fall that they were jointly developing a service to deliver movies over the Internet. That service, to make its debut sometime this year, would allow those who own TiVo digital video recorders to download and potentially store films they’ve ordered online. A TiVo spokeswoman declined to comment Friday.
“One industry source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the new Netflix service would be similar to fledgling, studio-supported ventures like MovieLink and CinemaNow. Those services allow people to rent copy-protected movies and television shows over the Internet and watch them on their computers. Such services struggled because they offer a limited number of new releases. That is unlikely to change, so long as DVD sales and rentals remain the largest single source of revenue for movie studios.” Source: YahooNews via SiliconValley.com

Being the type of person who prefers to avoid other people I was fond of Movielink for awhile, but this article is right on. Their selection of new movies isn’t particularly good. On top of that, renting a DVD from the local business is still cheaper than Movielink ($3 something local versus $5 something @ Movielink, for new movies).
Then you have the crazy time limits on watching the movie. Once you play it you trigger a time limit of something like 24 hours to watch the movie. A local rental gives you days for yourself and/or family to watch a flick.
With these restrictions and, worse, their limited selection of new movies these download services are a hard sell, even for someone like myself.

This is interesting, but effectively worthless unless the movie companies pull the collective sticks out of their butts and put up all the movies they have.
I still haven’t quite figured out why they don’t do it that way to begin with, but whatever.

I think this is a really good idea. Hopefully they’ll be able to offer a good selection of movies and decent viewing periods. I might actually use the service in that case.

I’d like to see it combined with the nextgen of Playstation and Xbox, so you could see the movies easily on your TV. Many don’t care for watching movies on their computer, and burning a new DVD for each movie would be a pain. Most people don’t have their computers hooked up to the TV set, but game consoles already are.

You MUST use Microsoft IE to do business with this company. What marketing genius at MovieLink came up with this gem of an idea? Why not extend that ridiculous thinking process and make downloads available to MIE users only on even numbered days of the week except during leap year?
