Sharp Dual View LCD

Talk about a true family TV. This new TV will help solve living-room conflicts in households around the world.

Sharp Corp unveiled today their new LCD TV that can simultaneously display different images into the right and left sides of the screen through a back light. The two different programs air at the same time depending where one sits. Viewers will get an uninterrupted view no matter where they sit, but what they see will change depending on the angle. Sharp will begin mass production of the display dubbed the “world’s first dual-view LCD”, by the end of the month and hitting shelves later this year.

You can also have a TV broadcast on the right screen, while surfing the Internet on the left screen.
“The dual-view LCD could also be put to use in a car, with a driver looking at a map navigation system while a friend in the passenger’s seat enjoys a DVD movie.”

“Sharp also announced a “veil-view” LCD that will let users change the viewing angle of their computers, mobile phones or other electronic gadgets to prevent curious people around them from spying.” Price of Dual View LCD:unknown. Source:AFP

John, that my friend is a very good question. I went over to the main Sharp website and took a look at the main press release. From what I quickly gathered, the answer is when using the dual viewing you have to choose right or left side. It appears center viewing is not possible. When the LCD is turned on to normal viewing all angles are fine. Which makes this TV, not very appealing to the home user since you would have to have the PERFECT setup to enjoy the dual viewing function.

Next they’ll have to coordinate the commercials. So the viewers can alternate turns getting the popcorn.

I’m curious how the audio output will be handled. Will the audio be different for each angle, or will the parents be watching Bill O’Reilly making cartoon sounds?

I’m guessing some sort of headphone solution will be used with dual audio outputs.

At first glance this seemed cool, then not. But where this would come in handy is parents watching a movie on one side, and kids could play video games (with headphones on) for the other side.

Who’s the guy that got captured in the photo (right frame reflection)? Seems there’s always something like that in promo photos. Ha ha.

I was listening to diggnation which also covered this and they came up with the idea that this could be really good for in-car navigation/entertainment. The passenger could watch a movie while the driver got navigation information.
