Talking Wine Labels

If you’re in a restaurant in Italy and the bottle of wine starts talking to you, don’t worry, you’re not drunk (not yet). Starting in November, Modulgraf, a Tuscan graphics and printing company, will start embedding chips into paper labels allowing information to be transmitted through handheld devices. The device which is based on RFID, will allow you to listen to information about the production history of the wine, type of food it should accompany and even play music . None of the wine manufactures have signed up yet but some have expressed interest. Modulgraf is hoping the talking wine label will be in restaurants, wine stores and vineyards.
I think this is all fine and dandy as long as your the person controlling which information you want to hear. What concerns me, is the day the marketing world catches on to this new captive audience and starts “feeding” ads while you eat. Source:Gizmodo via Reuters

Some day we’ll be able to place a tiny RFID tag on someone’s back and have the RFID send out a signal to nearby cell phones and PDAs that reads “Kick Me!”

What would be nice would be a RFID chip embedded in your clothing to tell bartenders what your favorite drink is or your usual drink.

I work as a bartender and that would be great, because of the loud music it’s not allways easy to hear what the drunk bastards are ordering.

It’s almost enough for me to give Willie Nelson’s new reggae album a try. Well, I said almost.
