Greenlighting: Do You Know What a Green Shirt with Upturned Collar Means?

This one is a bit out there for our traditional tech focus, but I include it here as more of a web commentary, and it’s a holiday weekend, so we can get a little nutty this week. I guess I just never cease to be amazed at number of truly bizzare online communities that organize and educate each other (for good and bad.)

Today’s case in point: Greenlighting.

Who knew that the simple act of wearing a green polo shirt with the collar up meant you were available for let’s just say, an anonymous encounter? This makes walking through the airport this coming Thursday a whole new world to investigate. I feel so innocent!

Anyway, if this appeals to you, or if you want to learn more, here’s a complete website devoted to the subtle art of Greenlighting.

Ah…the Internet….

This sounds suspiciously like ‘toothing’ where persons would broadcast bluetooth messages and then engage in sex with respondents. Later debunked as a hoax. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothing

The word on the street is - that this ‘new thing’, greenlighting, is a hoax. I’m sure the mainstream media will pick up on it soon and it will become a fullblown ‘thing’ just as kids go back to school in August.

    Just you wait and see…

Actually, this is SA’s first meta-hoax. The truth is that greenlighting is real, people are out there doing it, and the goons over at SA wanted to see if they could make people think that it was a hoax since it sounded so much like the “toothing” thing that DID turn out to be false. Pretty damn clever, if you ask me.

[…] And this is not the green shirt “Greenlighting“, collar-up sleaze approach we’ve seen in the past. We’re talking about how to signal tastefully. And most of all, can it even be done? Before all you skeptical singles start to dismiss this chic little ring as some sort of for-desperates-only gimmick, listen up: the Singelringen-wearing community is currently growing at a rate of around 5,000 per month and there are 30,000 wearers in 17 countries worldwide. Even celebs are going gaga over Singelringen, and we’re not talking Surreal Life Z-listers, we’re talking Hollywood A-listers. […]
