Flo control; Pet Recognition System

By Vic DaSilva

You’re a cat person, but not a lover of disease carrying wild animals especially ones with white stripes on their tales(aka Pepe le Pew). So here is the situation, you want your little fur ball to go in and out of the house but you want to keep Pepe le Pew away. Well, lucky for you a company by the name of Quantum Picture is working on a Pet recognition software. Using a regular cat door, a digital camera, a light source and a computer, the system can recognize whether it’s a cat or Pepe trying to get in, then decides whether to open sesame or keep the puppy closed. Hey this is pretty good. But a little on the “way too complicated” design side.
Not to steal the thread, BUT…..
I’ve already seen an RFID enabled device that unlocks a petdoor for dogs and /or cats. Just a simple little tag (much like the pets own rabies innoculation tag) is added to the pets collar. The range on the RFID detector is adjustable, looked like optimum range was 1-3 feet. And the lock mechanism was hidden in the pet doors frame, runs on normal AA cell batteries.
It was kind of expensive though, I think it was between $100-200
for a complete do-it-yourself kit.

I like the RFID idea. That sounds pretty foolproof as long as your battery doesn’t die
