Add Cheesy Ringtones to Your Land Line Phone With Jingle Ring
Alice’s Rant of the Day:For years I have been ranting like a crazy person about the fact that land line phones had fallen dangerously behind their cell phone brethren. Why couldn’t a cordless home phone have a color display and custom ringtones that tie to the incoming phone number? The latest phone I got from AT&T lets me put blocky black and white cat and horse icons on the phone’s LCD display, but aside from being ugly and embarrassing, they serve no purpose. Why can’t a pic of my friend pop up when they call just like what happens on my cell phone?
Well, at least today I found a product that will let you add in custom ring tones to your phone. It’s a little box called the Jingle Ring Deluxe and for $29.95 you get:
“This electronic telephone ringer allows you to replace the sound of that annoying ring! Its new microchip technology lets you choose one of eight exciting pre-recorded jingles (shudder - Alice):
Bugle Boy
Beethoven
Cows
Country Western
Racetrack
Harmony Quartet
English Butler
Rap
or create your own!
“You can also record your voice or favorite music. Its small compact design, is easy to install. The Jingle Ring is great fun at home or at the office. 4 AAA batteries - not included.”
Our Verdict: Can’t anyone do better than this??? I doubt this ties to the caller’s number, so you just get to choose between annoying ring themes, missing the whole point of ringtones as an audible identification vahichle as well as some fun.

I was at a Staples office supply place the other day and they had a 5.8GHz phone that did have a color screen that supposedly can be updated with custom images. They may have that same phone on their website, though I’ve found that many stores do not list all their inventory online (which gets a ‘totally stupid’ award).
Anyway - such a phone exists.

I have the Uniden 5.8ghz phone set - answering machine and 2 handsets - and it has a feature to allow different rings for different people, if I would have caller id - $6.95 a month for caller ID in my area, so they can keep it

and where the heck is FIOS at - man they need to speed up..argh

I would settle for a landline phone with a display that I can read.
My mobile phone has a large, bright, color, easy-to-read display.
My landline cordless phone has a small, monochrome, dim, almost-impossible-to-read display.
I have looked for landline phones with decent displays at Office Depot, etc. and have not found one.
I did see an magazine ad for a V-Tech phone (mentioned by Jason) that has a color display.
It appears to be only one on the market.

You want to get their attention? Ask the question out loud — why even have a landline? All of the features and value has moved into the mobile market. Once they see dollars going away, perhaps they will be more innovative.

In a similar vein, AT&T is selling one that looks and acts exactly like a cell phone, with speakerphone, vibrate mode, color LCD with customizable wallpaper, polyphonic ring tones, and even a 2-way page mode. http://www.customphones.com/item112504.ctlg for a picture of the handset.

For a slightly more detailed look at the entire system, including the “base station.”

I agree that landlines have been left behind. I work at home and use my cheapie landline but hate the sound of its ring. Have you heard of anything better than Jingle Box (or whatever it is)?

For us who are rural, all we have is landlines… yes, I live an hour away from San Diego, but have NO cell phone coverage here. At least this is a start. Now all I’m looking for is a customizable (recordable) ring for my cell phone when I’m in ‘the big city’.. does anyone make that?
