Intel Develops New All-in-One WiFi Chip
Wonder if Intel Will claim it inveted all WiFi chips now too?
“A new wireless computer chip has been developed by scientists at Intel Corp. The chip is capable of supporting every current Wi-Fi standard, as well as the projected requirements of an upcoming standard. The system-in-a-package technology is a significant step toward improved wireless capabilities at a low cost, said Intel of Santa Clara.
“Intel said it sees the time when one device will use smart antenna systems and a reconfigurable CMOS radio on a single device “making the radio more power efficient, smaller and lower cost. The goal being pursued is the ability to connect to any network, anytime, anywhere on any device.” Source: San Francisco Business Times

This really isn’t too different from all the “upgradable” modems being sold back in the days — the sales material promises upgrades to the modem speed is possible via reflashing of firmware when the new standards are finalized. Problem is, usually, by the time new standards are finalized, the company no longer sells/supports the product in question, so the so-called “upgrade disks” never materializes, even if you are willing to pay for them.

I am trying to measure the actual signal strength of a Wifi deployment in an office complex towards optimising the location of access points. Is there any software on the market that can capture the receive signal strength of Wifi signals at various points of the building? Just like you have drive test softwares in the mobile telecommunication.
