Booster Bags Use Foil to Foil Any Store’s Anti-Shoplifting Machines

With so many people new to RealTechNews this week (Welcome!) , I am re-running this item because it drew a lot of interest a few weeks ago. –Alice

A reader named Bob clued me into this interesting bit of news. Today I was covering a story about people lining their heads and even their homes with aluminum foil to protect themselves from what they feel is extreme radio wave radiation. The question I posed: are they crazy or just picking up on waves you and I cannot feel? (Click here to read about that and discuss.) But it turns out that foil is also used in a device called a “booster bag” that lets shoplifters walk out of the store undetected with tons of clothing, DVDs and other merchandise, because the foil essentially “foils” the anti-theft scanners at the store’s entrance. The scanners cannot “read” the anti theft tags and the thief walks out without a beep.

“Professional shoplifters have discovered a major weakness in conventional security systems – bags and clothes lined with layers of tinfoil could “hide” magnetic security tags from the antennas designed to detect them. Popularly called “booster bags” by industry specialists, these bags take just minutes to make and have rapidly become the “tool of choice” for shoplifters the world over. Booster bags provide shoplifters with enormous advantages because:

* they can contain large quantities of merchandise
* they look natural in a shopping environment
* security tagged items inside cannot be detected by conventional RF, AM, or EM systems
* they leave no evidence of the crime!

“Today, you’ll find stories in newspapers the world over about how 42 DVDs or 17 Armani shirts, or 30 bottles of expensive perfume have been found in a single booster bag – found because a security guard or shop assistant discovered the theft by chance. These stories appear despite the fact that most stores don’t like this kind of publicity since it may encourage some other petty thief to visit them with a tinfoil-lined booster bag.”

If this doesn’t move the industry to RFID, I don’t know what will. Thanks Bob! And DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME.

In my training at Circuit City they definitely went over these things. It’s not always bags, too. Sometimes it’ll be areas inside of jackets or something.

So what do you do? Frisk everyone?

  3. David says:

Nope, they just put pressure on them. Also, the people who engage in this kind of theft are professionals so they strike a bunch of stores multiple times. The managers remember who they are and will call the police when they see them enter looking suspicious. The police take care of it when that happens, but frequently there’s nothing much the store can do other than let these people walk out with $100+ of merchandise.

Actually, since booster bags “defeats conventional RF systems,” wouldn’t RFID continue to be defeated by this sort of system?

Unless you actually use RFID to tag every single item in the store with a unique ID, and have a store-wide alert if any of the items “disappears” for more than a few seconds without record of being paid for, booster bags will continue to block out the radio frequencies and renders RFIDs rather useless, yes?

Seems like it’s always the $2 system that defeats the million-dollar system…here, it’s tinfoil to defeat an expensive anti-theft system. Remember the copy protection scheme (was it CD or DVD?) that could be defeated with a Magic Marker?

You would think that they would have found a way to counter this. But, it’s not just lined bags… I worked for a women’s clothing store (very high-end) and we had a group who actually found a way to make legitimate looking copies of receipts. It’s amazing how much effort into it… you would think they would just work!! and that would be easier!

60 minutes coverd this a few months ago. The booster bags are mostly used by latin america shoptlifting teams. They roll into a town in force, setup a few people in each team. Often a spotter a few grabbers and a getaway. They are in and out fast and hit many stores in an area at a time. The great thing is that shoplifting is a minor crime, so they get deported, then a few days later they cross back into the country across with a new name and it starts all over again.

Nothing New here. The technology is RF or what we commonly Micro Waves, By Law the transmitters cannot exceed a very low level of emissions typically around 25-100 milliwatt which creates a field through which the TAG passes. This level of emissions is SOOO LOW that it bounces off human skin. All you need to do to sheild a TAG is to hold it between your Arm and Body or wrap it in your palm by making a fist around it.

In Other words Tin Foil or other sheilding is OVERKILL.

These booster bags have been around for at least ten years. I confiscated some when I worked as a store manager at The Limited back in the early nineties in Burbank. The teams were very organized and could clear whole racks in a matter of minutes using another pair to distract the sales associates.

The problem that particular group ran into was that I worked all over Los Angeles and I recognized several of them showing up to other stores where they’d attempt to return some of the merchandise for “store credit” which they’d then sell for cash and alerted mall security and other stores.

Anyway, it’s interesting to see how much things don’t change, and that the simplest solutions are often the most enduring.

  18. john says:

    two things:

    1. if you hold items with those tags (not RFID) above your head when you leave, the system doesn’t see them.

    2. the receipt thing is decades old; a schoolmate of mine went to jail because he manufactured receipts and returned stolen merchandise for the money.

In a local Wal-Mart, four guys hit the over night shift hard by walking in, grabbing some carts and heading in different directions. One busted open the camera box and took all the Panasonic DV Camcorders; another took as many XBox/PS2/GC consoles as would fit in his cart, and the others moved the merchandise to the back of the store and out a fire door.

    They all got away.

Theft is hard to stop when those stealing are determined to succeed.

This has been happening for years… Motorcycle helmets can be foiled under the foam on the inside and held casually like a basket. It wasn’t until we caught a guy on camera and had a real close look at the helmet we discovered what he’d been up to.

I guess it’s like any security - some cunning little bugger will find away around it.

Furthermore in the majority of cases when an alarm sounds in a busy store no one reacts to it as the demagnetiser often fails and false signals from phones and such are frequent and traffic is too dense to easily single out the offender.

  29. bernie swarts says:

I understand that the item was invented by a E. Cart or something like that in Chicago twenty some years ago as a presentation to sell his security consulting services to retails stores by demostrating the flaws in their system.

I understand that channel (2) News in Chicago did a news story about it, reporter Mike Parker reporting. There was also an artical in the Chicago News paper the(READER)on why they rejected adds from seller’s of the (BOOSTER BAGS)because it encouraged stealing. In the news story E.Cart’s security consulting was rejected by the retail store chains so E.Cart went public with his knowledge about the flaws in the security system of the retail stores.

Can this be confirmed? who introduced the now ever present booster bag? Was it E. Cart. Did channel (2) New in Chicago, reporter Mike Parker do the public a disservice in reporting on the existence of the item? Can you answer any of the question?

Umm, why even bother with the bag? RF blocking fabric or mylar could easily replace pocket lining in a jacket or jeans or something. I know someone who did this to shield their cellphone when it is in their pocket (not sure what that accomplishes for them though, as they can’t receive calls)

Hey Dude and dudets I like to say Thank you For teaching a old thief a new trick. . . I have put the new knowledge to test and It works like a charm….And as for the walking in with the bag in hand is suspect like a mofo…just fold it up small enuff to be placed in your beltlining (So your not seen walking in with it).
And by the time your on your way out they are powerless(Unless you were seen stashing the goods)to do anything. If they ask to look in your bag, just say no and keep on truckin(ever here of illeagal search). If the “Boosterbag” is folded small than a pice of A4 type of paper(A little longer, legith wise than a regular piece of paper)The specs which I have read myself from the Alertmetalguard web site, it cannot be detected. Also if you stash the “Boosterbag” on you, perpendicular to the Transmitter as you walk in its even harder to detectB~) See my saying is true”When the law gets even clever, the criminal gets even more clever”.

Thank you once again world for informing the public on how to shoplift without even knowing it,you fucked up your own cause. THATS RIGHT BITCHES THE THEIVES ARE MORE CLEVER,WE WILL FIND A TWO DOLLAR WAY AROUND YOUR EXPENSIVE SOLUTIONS. Maybe if employees spent more time in front of the cameras and less time eating their sandwiches then maybe there wouldnt be a problem. BECAUSE OF YOUR STUPIDITY ALL YOU FUCKHEADS DESERVE TO BE ROBBED BLIND.

  41. Secret info says:

Alright, that last guy is an idiot. First, the worst thing a blue collar criminal can do is announce to the world who he is. Store security measures might suck, but internet tracking systems are not crap. So, thank yourself for leaving enough info to track down your IP address.

Anyway, because I hate corporate stores, if not only for the jobs they steal by muscling out the little guy, here is some info on two places I’ve worked. First, Best Buy. I worked as an LP (Loss Prevention) guy there for a year. Best Buy, like many corporate companies who fear the big law suits, has insanely strict rules about what you can do if someone is shoplifting. First, if you catch someone on camera sticking something in a bag, you must keep 100% camera coverage on that person… which is next to impossible since most stores do not have 100% camera coverage in the store. If they lose you on camera for even a second, they can’t do anything to you. Their corporate offices demand that they do not stop you or accuse you of stealing… because you could potentialy have dropped the item during that one second that you were not on camera. At most, the LP guy at the door can ask to check your bag if the alarm goes off… if you say “no” he can’t do anything! While you’re in the store, the LP guy can call the police… the police could stop you. BUT, Best Buy will not press charges if they do not have 100% camera coverage on you up until the moment you leave the store. The only acception, of course, is that if the LP guy manages to get another employee to follow you before he loses 100% camera coverage of you, then you’re screwed, because they have someone with their eyes on you.

Now for the insane corporate policy. PAC SUN (Pacific Sunwear). I could NOT believe their policy on shoplifters. PAC SUN will NOT press charges on you UNLESS you walk out of the store with the item out in the open. I couldn’t believe it when they told me their policy. You can LITERALLY put an item into your purse RIGHT IN FRONT of one of the employees… and walk right out. The alarm will go off and the employee may say something to you… but they can’t stop you… they can’t press charges. They CAN call mall security and ask them to keep an eye on you. But they seriously have to tell the mall security, “I wanted you to know that we THINK that this person stole from us, we’d like you to follow them, but we can’t allow you to apprehend them and, if you do apprehend them, our company will not press charges. However, if you catch them stealing from another store, we’d like our merchandise back.” Can you believe it!?!?

I think the thing that pisses me off the most about those policies is the way that both of these companies treat their employees. You are treated like a criminal if you work for most corporate retail stores. Yeah, it’s almost impossible for them to nab a shoplifter and prosecute them… but when you’re an employee, what do they do? They SEARCH YOUR BAG/COAT/PURSE every single time you work a shift. They pat down their own employees like thieves. The end result is this… employees who are more than willing to reveal your corporate policies on shoplifting.

  47. krys says:

what about the cell phone test? Have you guys heard of this? You put a cell phone into the ‘booster bag’ call it & if it does not ring your bag will work, if it does ring then you need more foil. I wrapped my cell phone in foil and it didn’t interrupt the signal until there were 20 layers!!! I never shoplifted with a booster bag but come on… it can’t take 20 layers to be effective can it??? And one more thing… if a bag is lined on the bottom and sides with the top still open (to put stuff in) well… won’t the signal go in through the top of the bag? Or do booster bags require that they are completely closed?

    June 27th, 2007 at 2:48 am

  48. Massamiliano Argento says:

    to krys:

yeah apparently you need like 30 layers or something, but the bag doesn’t need to be a work just something makeshift.

NOTE: copper foil works much better than aluminium foil

and as for the whole bag thing, i doubt the frequencies can travel over the bag. just horizontally, and reflect of the foil, I’ve seen this been done before and they just casually walked out the front door carrying a shopping bag like the way you normally would.

Which bring me to my story

The other day, while i was working (I work at Xile as a checkout boy, yeah i know crap job right?, anyways at Xile sell real high end merchandise like versace, dolce, zegna, cavalli, gucci, etc). Anyways in walks this guy (roughly in his thirties well dressed, probably rich judging from his dress taste), he’s carrying a large paper ralph lauren bag (the kind you only get in boutiques). He starts walking around the store, I started following him around just to see what he was doing, he picks up a jacket straight from the rack and puts it in his bag, does the same with a few more items, even underwear.

I thought this was kind of amusing, I even walked up to him and asked if he needed any help. I took a peak in his bag and saw that the entire bag was lined with foil.

After about 5-10 minutes, the guy gets up and decides to walk out the door. At this point i figure there is no way in hell he could get passed out security system, ours is top of the line, and plus it would be funny just to see him get caught.

So i just stood back and decided to watch, cool as ever the guy walks past the door, straight passed the security guards (who if i may add did not search his bag!) and the alarm didn’t go off!!!

After seven years of retail experience and two years experience at Xile, never have I seen anyone get passed our security system.

Which brings me to my conclusion, how can this be countered? If something so small like a bag covered in foil can beat a top of range security system.

the booster bag one question how do you know if they have a new system like alertmetalguard and if so can it be beat by using the em shielding cloth as mentioned above does it detect metal or what?

Yo i figured it out even if they have metalguard so what enough matieral of any fabric should block the signal from being picked up by the detector as long as its covered on all sides or u could say u have a pacemaker and pretend to have a heartattack if they stop u @ door

6 layers of heavy duty reynolds wrap, actually make it in the shap of a bag. wrap it in a colorful duct tape. Not only does it look like a real designer handbag, it folds over on the top and closes it completely. works great also as purse liner. I added a magnetic strip from the craft store just for extra insurance. Passed the walmart test yesterday. OMG 12 dvd’s in one pop! I’m in heaven!! and have a lovely designer ‘booster bag’. Also passed all the grocery stores! They have alot of high dollar items in health and beauty for resale. I highly recommend the aluminum foil. next stop…trying the mall. Just make sure no one ’sees’ u put it in the bag and u are good to go!

    Please someone help:
I went for a trip from Brazil to France last year and in Paris I was using a backpack (bag just like those that kids use to go to school) bought in Brazil but made in China, to carry my tourist things: camera, tripod, water, maps, etc.

In some stores the bag was the factor that made the antishoplift systems to beep. In one store I had to empty my bag, so the empty bag still sounded the beep.

I looked for any security device in the bag very careful, and find nothing.

Not every store beeped with the bag. Galleries Laffayette beeped. Many other small beeped also.

What can I do to find the security device in the bag?
