Skype for Your Land Line
Most RealTechNews.com readers know that I love Skype. The download is free and when paired with a USB headset, it allows you to make clear and free calls via the Internet. Thanks to Skype’s proprietary P2P technology, it’s the first “soft phone” that manages to end the dropped sounds and static normally associated with Voice Over IP calling. Only downside: you have stay near your PC to make those calls. Until now, that is….
Actiontec has developed an adapter that will allow you to place Skype-calls with your home’s existing telephones. The Internet Connection Wizard is an adapter that can answer and place Skype calls as well as calls from an existing land line. No word on pricing or availability, and I am still not sure how you can call someone who shows up in Skype as a name in your buddy list (I am guessing you use the speed dial feature) but this will be a welcomed add-on to those addicted to Skype but not the headset method of calling.
