Microsoft Excited by Portable Video Players
Perhaps it is finally conceding the iPod to Apple, but Microsoft is making sure it won't be left out of the "video iPod" market. Now it just has to cram Windows onto a tiny player and see if the code bloat and bugginess will spell sales. Look for portable MediaCenters to be on sale in Europe by the end of the year.

Cell Love
Reuters: "Would-be daters looking for a "significant other" may soon be able to subscribe to a service which stores in their phones a personal profile and information on what they want most from a partner. When there are enough similarities between two people, and they happen to be in close proximity, the service tells their phones to communicate with each other. Called Serendipity, the service was created by a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. The latter-day cupids hope to offer people an alternative to online dating."

More USB Oddities
Hello Kitty Dept: It seems as though every week brings us yet another off the wall USB device. There are USB coffee warmers, odd Christmas tree lights, and now the official Hello Kitty USB port, that actually has the nerve to charge $80 for 2 ports. Meee yowwww.

Enable the 30 Second Skip on your TiVo Remote
The only feature missing on my beloved TiVo is not really missing at all - enable the 30 second commercial skip button with this elegant hack. From weaknees.com:
1 Start playing any recording.
2 During playback press:
Select - Play - Select - 3 - 0 - Select
3 You should hear three bongs (if you don't have the TiVo sounds disabled), and you're done. Your "skip to beginning/end" button (the arrow pointing to a line) is now a 30 second skip button. During fast-forwarding or rewinding, the button will still "skip to tick."

Wristomo The Cellphone Wristwatch
I was dubious about the new Wristomo wristwatch cellphone until I saw a cool movie on their website. The device pops off your wrist when a call comes in, making it easy to actually hear, see, or feel the vibration from the phone when you get a call. Not a bad concept, even if the watch is big enough to double as a prison tracking bracelet.

TinyURL Makes long URLs Tiny
Think Small Dept:Their website says it best, "Are you sick of posting URLs in emails only to have it break when sent causing the recipient to have to cut and paste it back together? Then you've come to the right place. By entering in a URL in the text field below, we will create a tiny URL that will not break in email postings and never expires."

Frozen Lobsters Live
Creepy Science Dept: According to the Sun Sentinel, "A Connecticut company says its frozen lobsters sometimes come back to life when thawed. Trufresh began freezing lobsters with a technique it used for years on salmon after an offhand suggestion by some workers. It found that some lobsters revived after their subzero sojourns." But is that a good thing?

iPod Copycat pBop Vanishes
Apple got tough over innovative-but-legally-challenged StarBrite Solutions Ltd's new software product called pBop. pBop created an iPod interface on a Pocket PC handlheld. At $20, the software was inexpensive and eventually found to be too potentially illegal to keep on selling, so pBop we salute you though we hardly knew you.

Note: if the Starbrite site gives you a server error, hit refresh once or twice to read the announcement.
