Online apps keep on getting better. Our own David Johnston has been a big fan of Open Office as a competitor to the traditional suite of Microsoft Office apps you load on your own system. But here’s a suite of similar apps (spreadsheet, word processor, presentation, drawing, etc.) from Ajax13 that load in your browser (meaning no download necessary), work on any OS, and works with Microsoft Office and Open Office files in seconds. Pretty slick. And most of the apps are under 400K, so they load in seconds too.
We Think: With more of us online all the time, the days of the $499 office suite are looking a little pricey. Office 2007 has a very nice new UI that may keep us corporate users down on the farm another year or so, but for many college student and people on the go – give this a try.

What a bunch of nonsense. Most people aren’t going to want to have to put up with advertising and having to be online in order to simply type a letter! Online services establish a precedent for Microsoft’s goal of RENTING SOFTWARE, so Just say NO to online services. Software on your hard drive is the way to go. And rather than paying $499 for an office suite, take a look at the excellent OpenOffice.org.
Everybody had better wake up to the fact that big corporations are trying to end the era of the personal computer and shove the concept of only having a workstation down everybody’s collective throats.
WAKE UP!!!
First off, I don’t see anything gravely wrong with ads, as long as they don’t interfere with my work. They do have to cover hosting costs, and I’d rather that they do it with ads rather than subscription fees.
Second, the cost of a software license is only a small proportion of the costs of any software. There’s the cost of back-up, not just a license for back-up software (can avoid that by going with free-beer backup software) but with the time you have to put into it. If there’s a company out there that will take care of saving my files online, they’ve got my business. Better if they’re advertising-supported so I don’t have to pay.
Third — and corollary to the second point — another cost of software is maintenance. When an update comes in, I have to take time to download and install it. OTOH, a hosted application is upgraded on the server, without my having to worry about it — I’d let the SysAdmins take care of that.
Having said all that, I do still have OOo on my PC, and use it more than I do the online office suites. But then, I do have both the expertise and the time — and maybe the requisite masochism — to take care of my own setup.
Sorry, forgot another thing about online software applications. At least for Writely, you can “share” your document so that others can work on it. This is more efficient than emailing a document back and forth, and that efficiency manifests itself when you’re working with a team — although one might argue that a wiki would be even better. Still, that gives Writely a wiki-like feel.
