Asus will begin shipping a luxury PC which is a leather covered laptop, for UK customers next month. These upscale Asus Model S6F laptops will sell for £1,700 and will come with leather cowhide in Light Camel or Dark Chocolate Brown colors. This laptop has a 1.6GHz low-voltage dual-core Core Duo L2400 backed by 1GB of DDR 2 SDRAM, a 100GB hard drive and a multi-format DVD writer. It uses Intel’s latest Centrio chipset, the 945GM, which has on-board graphics to power the 11in WXGA anti-glare screen. Also includes 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet.

Nice laptop for the commuter who has everything. What about a snake skin version for the Texas Cowboy here in the United States? This could be the start of a whole new marketing battle for distinct looks and visual features, versus the normal high tech hardware list consumers use for comparison. We will have to wait and see.

Leather melts at how many degrees?
Leather doesnt melt. It is formed of animal hide, so it would burn at high enough temperatures, but these temperatures are incredibly high, and the rest of the laptop would be destroyed anyway at those temperatures.

This has been tried before, and in the mid-90’s I said that on a portable device like a laptop, the leather would tear up. The company that made them (I forget their name) berated my posts as silly. They later stopped all mention of the laptop due to torn leather.
It’s all happening again. I predict that in one year these will no longer be sold. I’m sure this post will be countered by the company, who will be paranoid about their image. In one year, these will no longer be for sale due to torn leather.

Yeah the leather tearing is definitely possible. I’d imagine that it depends on the quality and thickness of the leather used though.
Also, the whole thing is really just a gimmick, so the chances of it being on sale after a year anyway are pretty slim.
