Enterprise NCC-1701

I loved Star Trek when it was first on. Little did I realize that when I would later watch Star Trek: The Next Generation, I would think “man, the original series was corny”. Corny plotlines, corny Kirk-gets-every-girl-around, corny music (and yes, I realize that the first season of TNG had the same corny music whenever anything dramatic happened). TNG was a great improvement, and I also liked Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

That was it, though. Voyager was sub-standard, and don’t even get me started on Enterprise. Well, let’s hope a return trip to the Federation of Kirk and Spock does not again fall into the corny category, as Paramount Pictures announced today that “Mission Impossible III” director J.J. Abrams (also known for Alias and Lost) will produce the next Star Trek feature film.

Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of “Star Trek” characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission. Source: Reuters

We Say: Good, bad? We’ll have to see. We’ll also have to see how much history they rewrite. For example, anyone who remembers “Where No Man Has Gone Before“, which was the first Kirk / Spock episode filmed, though not the first Star Trek episode filmed, remembers that McCoy was not the doctor then.

Of course, as viewers of Enterprise may recall, maintaining canon is not a big issue with the current Star Trek writers. :-)
