Snowy Egret Stamp

In what is undoubtedly meant as a response to all the negative feedback about their email postage idea (one tentatively shared by Yahoo, by the way), AOL today said it was going to “basically” pick up the tab for nonprofits in terms of its new postage.

Dulles, Va.-based AOL said Friday that it will offer nonprofit organizations two new free e-mail options that possess many of the features, including images and Web links, of the company’s premium service designed for commercial mass e-mail.

On Monday, a consortium of nonprofit and public interest groups, including MoveOn.org Civic Action, the American Federation of Labor – Congress of Industrial Organizations, Gun Owners of America and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, lashed out at the plan by AOL and Yahoo to charge a fee for guaranteed delivery of bulk e-mails. We Say: Hmmm. Sounds like they are trying to silence those who have been the most vocal critics of this plan. I wonder what “many of the features” means. The key point to me on all of this is the Net Neutrality issue. No matter what AOL promises nonprofits, this plan is still works against Net Neutrality.
