Continuing on their commitment to the hard drive, Hitachi announced their new Notebook PC Upgrade Kit, a complete upgrade solution that consumers can install themselves. It includes an internal hard drive for upgrade and tools to create an external storage device using the existing hard drive.
The Hitachi Travelstar 2.5-inch Hard Drive Upgrade Kit will be available later this month at major retail stores nationwide.
The upgrade kit consists of a 5400 RPM 40, 60, 80 or 100 GB capacity hard drive, complete installation instructions, Apricorn EZ Gig II™ Hard Drive Cloning and Upgrade software, a high-speed USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure, a one-meter USB cable and auxiliary power cables.
Hitachi’s Notebook PC Upgrade Kit comes on the heels of the company’s desire to corner the market for consumer data storage, believing that laptop users want a way to easily boost the performance of their machines. Apricorn (and others probably)have been around for years. Just do a search on Google groups and you can easily find posts referencing their stuff from 1998.
Stuff like this makes me question the reliability of this site. What made you think this was first?
Gotta go with Bill here. Apricorn, SimpleTech, CMS, just to name a few. And these have been around for a while. Apricorn has been around for over 5 years that I am aware of. And these are full kits (which include file transfer utilities) not just a hard disk drive in a bag.

I second Steve – the kit includes Apricorn software and it positioned for consumers as a DIY solution.
