Over Half a Million to Attend CeBIT Technology Trade Show
I can't believe Comdex fell apart just as the fever for all things electronic seems to be seriously taking hold. First CES kcocked the cover off the ball in Las Vegas, and now over 500,000 people are getting ready to check out the latest tecnho wares in Hanover, Germany this week. Here's what they have in store.
"Well over 510,000 visitors are expected to brave the polar weather conditions currently ravaging northwestern Europe to roam the 27 hanger-sized halls, the fair's organization said. They will find a wide range of the latest technologies and services that may be standard features in a few years time.
"The German Fraunhofer Institut will show a monitor display with three-dimensional images, that can be viewed from a 60-degree angle without special glasses, while the objects can be manipulated by gestures recognized by bio-sensors.
"Major electronics companies such as Samsung and Sharp which will push bigger and better quality flat TVs for specific markets. Others will show the first foldable displays. Television and computing will be harder to distinguish, with plenty of cheap TV tuners to plug into computers, and media boxes that beam music from a PC to a HiFi music set.
"The lines between telecommunications and Internet are also blurring as dozens of companies introduce devices to make free calls with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. An added irritation to telecoms operators is growing speculation that Internet telephony companies such as Skype are eyeing mobile devices as their latest target as they threaten to revolutionize the telecoms market. Several corded and cordless Skype phones will be shown by Siemens, Motorola, Good Way Technologies, Greatwall Infotech.
"There will even be the first payphones that run on VoIP and announcements to offer WiFi on trains in Britain and Germany."
