Microsoft to Give Windows Away for Free?
By David Johnston
I just saw a very interesting tidbit of news on the Inquirer today involving Microsoft's release of Windows XP 64-bit Edition. Apparently, users of Windows XP may not have to buy XP-64. Instead, they will be able to register on Microsoft's website and download the software. I have to admit that I was shocked when I heard this and I'm still not sure whether or not I believe it. This is very good news for consumers who already own 64-bit processors because it has also been reported that Microsoft will not release a retail version of XP-64. Perhaps this is the compromise, but I do think that if it's true, the consumer is actually getting the better end of the deal.
