The Amazing FlyGun Kills Flies

Wacky Tech Dept: It's Friday. It's warm outside. It's almost time to kick-off the weekend. So what better way to usher in the first hint of spring (in California anyway) than with a wacky gadget?

Introducing the FlyGun. It's only $6.95 which makes me question it's prowess, but with a couple of big flies buzzing by my window, I have to say I am tempted to order one. Wonder if they send out eval units?!

We have one of these in our sharehouse. While none of us have yet succeeded in killing a fly with it, the spring in the gun is powerful enough to launch the swatter right across a large room--making this a useful addition to one's arsenal in those sharehouse romps/brawls.

These have been around for at least 15 years. I've killed a few bugs with 'em, but a good old flyswatter is better.

I bought one in Baltimore in 1985. for $2.00

I had one, and I can report that they don't work for killing flies. The plastic used to make them is too flexible and the spring bends the plastic a fraction, just enough to make them impossible to aim accuraterly. And even on the rare occasion that you do manage to hit a fly, you have to have a direct flat-on shot because the 'splatter' part isn't flexible; at an angle to the splat surface it just bounces off the surface.

Much much better is the high-voltage flyswatter. It's a portable version of those bug zappers; it's got wires strung kind of like a tennis racket. You press a button while taking a sweep at the fly and zzzzzzzzzt.
