Skype for Everyone: New PC Version Plus Mac and Linux
A new version of Skype came out for the PC yesterday, version 1.1 for those who are counting, but the big news was the added platform support for the Mac and Linux platforms. Over at Newsfactor Network, they had this to report: "Skype has rolled out Mac OS X Latest News about OS X and Linux versions of its free voice over Internet product. Both versions include Skype to Skype calling and conference calling for up to five participants, as well as the pre-pay SkypeOut service, which allows users to call any landline or mobile worldwide at local rates.

"Other features include a contacts directory, instant messaging Latest News about instant messaging, call and message logs, presence -- that is, a way to view the status of contacts -- customization tools and file transfer. Skype for Linux 1.0 has been been tested on several distributions, according to the company, including SuSE Latest News about SuSE 9, Gentoo 1.4, Fedora Core 2, Sun Java Latest News about Java Desktop System Release 2 and Xandros."

I can confirm that Skype for Linux 1.0 works well on Fedora Core 3.

Skype 1.1 (Windows) also works well on my newly Athlon 64-ized computer, but make sure that Data Execution Prevention in Windows XP Service Pack 2 is only set for necessary Windows things and not *all* programs because it causes Skype to crash.

Well, that's not completely correct. There's been Skype for Mac OS X since 8/31 of last year, it's just that yesterday it came out of "beta" (it was a public beta, on the same "download" website and everything), so it now has almost all of the features of the Windows version (conference call came out in the past month, for an example of a feature that was added in later).

Still, Skype is good. It's the A part of iChat AV across multiple platforms, and it "just works™", which is a thing I like quite a bit because that's what I'm used to as a Mac user.

Yeah, I've also been using the Beta releases for Linux and they've worked okay. A few disconnects here and there though.
