Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) Alliance.
You already know what we think about "Alliances" in general. Well, here comes another one, the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) Alliance. Why? So you can fit a terabyte of data (whatever) on a single CD disc. Who? Fuji Photo, CMC Magnentics, Optiware, and three others two low in stature to be mentioned in the news.com article. Billed as the successor to technologies such as Blu-ray and HD DVD,
Sony unveiled a home server with 1TB of storage for the Japanese market last year. Half of the capacity would be enough to record six channels of TV for five and a half days non-stop, Sony said. The organization, however, is looking at first developing discs with lower capacities. The first assignments of the technical committee involve coming up with standards for a 200GB recordable disc and a 100GB read-only disc. >Two hours of HD programming, says the story, take up about 15GB to 25GB.
A technical committee formed last December to flesh out HVD standards. No word on when actual product might hit the streets. The office pool currently favors 2008.
