Highlights from Demo@15
Alice Show Floor Report, DEMO Conference, Scottsdale, AZ So I finally got to attend the famous Demo conference this past week as it celebrated 15 years of white-knuckled 6-minute-only live demos with no Powerpoints permitted. This is where Tivo made its debut, and where over 75 lucky young companies get to showcase their new technologies for the VCs and journalists circling the room like edgy sharks.
My personal take: I am sorry to say that nothing really grabbed me. There were easier to install internet security cams, and cool presentation tools, 3D audio for 3G cell phone gaming (uh...hello?) and a bunch of stuff that didn't work when the internet connection went down. There were legendary honorees as well as timely guests such as Mike Ramsey, the "departing" CEO of Tivo, but nothing made me rush to my room to post a frenzied entry, and the demo hall I scoped out after the main ceremonies was somewhat ho-hum. However, I loved the format of the show, but for sheer gee whiz oomph, it looks like CES and its flat panel MP3 world of color and coolness is where the action is this year. Shouts out to Chris Shipley an old colleague of mine from my Ziff Davis days - she pulled together one Hell of a line up.
