Exodus? TiVo President Resigns
On the heels of TiVo CEO Mike Ramsey's departure, Marty Yudkovitz, the President of TiVo announced today that he was "going to spend more time with the family" (aka = canned by the board of directors) Before you scratch your head in wonder, let me break this down for us all. There are three schools of thought right now when it comes to TiVo.
One: TiVo Stopped Innovating
The argument is that TiVo did nothing in 2004 but try and sign deals and that resulted in dangerous stagnation.
Two: TiVo Happened Too Soon
Get too far out ahead and you run out of cash before people love and snap up your product. Or that the concept is just too radical to catch on, then does so later on after you have exited the market. (Think Apple Newton)
Three: TiVo Should Become PalmOS and Exit The Hardware Business Actually, that one is my theory. I love the interface and I suppose actually care little about the box. But, if they open up the platform and make it the next PC platform (a la IBM PC) with open standards and easy access, then maybe they have the secret weapon after all. Distressing that the CEO and Pres. are now out of there, but the Pres was a lame-o from NBS, so don't get the toe tag out yet folks.
